BACKGROUND INFO

North-eastern Coal Field of Coal India Limited is wanting to use part of a 98.59 hectares of forest reserve land in the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve for coal mining and the other part is being considered for underground coal mining
The area connects forest land, and elephant preservation site which means if the plan goes ahead it will affect the movement of the elephants and promote conflict between elephants and humans
The reserve also home to 293 species of birds, 30 species of butterfly and 100 species of orchids which rely on the tropical vegetation in the forest
