Background
Uruguay has signed and ratified the Escazu Agreement, on September 26th, 2019.
Environment
Uruguay is better than most countries concerning green energy, 56% of energy produced is eco-friendly and renewable.
Uruguay’s current ecological problems are greatest with water contamination by toxic waste, heavy livestock production, and deforestation. The livestock industry and contamination of water by chemicals make many sources of water in Uruguay unsafe for drinking.
A unique but increasing problem in Uruguay is deforestation. In many cases, trees chopped down for forestry are replaced with foreighn trees that invade local ecosystems and are less hospitable to local wildlife.
