What exactly is the Escazú Agreement and how can it help Perú?

Protecting the environment🌻🍃🌱🌊🌈

In terms of the environment, Peru is among the five most diverse countries in the world. Unfortunately, this also means that it is a victim of the over-exploitation of its resources, which is why deforestation and mining are serious problems in the country. This not only affects the environment but also the communities that live there. The Escazú agreement is really important so that their well-being comes before economic benefit.
🌳More information about deforestation and its consequences🌳
The Peruvian Amazon has very serious threats that have resulted in high rates of deforestation over the past 20 years. The main one is illegal gold mining, although we must also consider the legal one, which is destroying the jungle, turning it into deserts and wells in the south of the country, mainly in the Madre de Dios region. There are also other problems such as the construction of roads that open up the forest to other activities, agriculture and wood extraction.
In Peru, approximately 150,000 hectares of forest are lost every year. A study done between 2001 and 2015 on deforestation in native communities entitled Communities in the Peruvian Amazon indicates that in that period 1 932 872 hectares of forest were lost in Peru, of which 333 708 hectares were within native communities.
In the 2019 ranking of the world's most deforested forests, Peru, with 162,000 hectares of primary forest lost, ranks fifth worldwide and third in Latin America. This figure is a little more than 20,000 hectares more than those lost in 2018.
Land rental and subsequent land encroachment, illegal crops and illegal mining are present in the most deforested communities in Peru.
⛏️More about mining⛏️
The report of the 26th Observatory of Mining Conflicts indicates that, despite the state of national emergency in force since last March, several of the mining-related conflicts are "in a state of latency" and other assets.
Among them is the Tia Maria copper project in the southern region of Arequipa, where, he said, the Southern company "has reactivated its campaign to resume" the activity, which motivated the population of the nearby Tambo Valley, who believe that this work will contaminate their lands, to organize protests in rejection.
In addition, social organizations and peasant communities in the area of the so-called "Southern Mining Corridor" denounced an "excessive presence" of trucks transporting minerals for Las Bambas mining company, in the region of Apurimac, which they believe exposes workers and neighboring communities to possible COVID-19 infections.

Protecting the defenders 📢

How would it help?
Although global activism on the climate crisis has gained momentum, a relatively unknown fact is that the people fighting for these causes on the front lines are the advocates who are often leaders of communities whose rights and well-being are under constant threat as they defend their homes, water, air, land, territory and forests from destruction by extractive industries and pollution.
The Escazú agreement by guaranteeing access to information, participation and environmental justice is taking into consideration the communities and their leaders so it would be helping to protect them. If they are included from the beginning and decisions are made in a way that benefits both parties but with the defenders as the priority, then they would have nothing to oppose.
Why would it help?
The current situation of environmental defenders is very critical, unfortunately neglected by the Peruvian authorities. They live under threat, raped and can even be accused of complaining, of opposing project decisions and of organizing protests with the community, which can lead to them being considered terrorists.

🚨They suffer from criminalization, judicial harassment, stigmatization, intimidation and excessive use of police force during social protests🚨
Activities related to attacks against environmental defenders include agro-industry, mining, oil extraction, illegal hunting, logging, dam construction, water use, illegal fishing, among others.
At least 28 human rights, indigenous and environmental defenders lost their lives during 2018 in Latin America, reported Cultural Survival in a recent article. Peru is one of eight countries where these crimes were committed.

Let's get it ratified!

✔️ The Ministry of the Environment, representing the government of Peru, signed the agreement in 2018
Its ratification by Congress remains necessary for the treaty to enter into force and become binding on the States that signed it. The agreement is now in the hands of the congressmen of the Foreign Affairs Committee and it is up to them that the agreement can be discussed in the plenary of the Congress.

"This multinational agreement represents one of the opportunities to strengthen the links between Latin American countries on a very important and critical issue such as transparency in environmental matters, as well as "the possibility of allowing the most vulnerable populations effective access to information and promoting environmental justice. - Fabiola Muñoz, Minister of Environment of Peru

Muchas gracias,

Mi nombre es (your name) y soy de (your country in Spanish if possible).

Atentamente,
