Background

Honduras did not help create the Escazú agreement, and is not part of it. As a result of many current issues including but not limited to government corruption, increasing poverty levels above 65%, and increasing gang violence, it is unlikely to participate.

Environment

Deforestation is a big problem in Honduras as a result of unsustainable logging industries. This also leads to problems with soil erosion and land degradation.

As a result of mining activities, heavy metals used in mining often leak out into water supplies, as well as other mining chemicals. Otherside effects caused by mining apply, but this is the worst of them for Honduras. Water treatment in Honduras is insufficient, chemicals and metals that leak into water supplies from mining can harm people.

Defenders

Honduras has the highest rate of murder for environmental activists in the world. Several companies, such as Desarrollos Energéticos Sociedad Anónima have been known to hire professional assassins to kill activists so that projects can go on unprotested. The government has been accused of trying to cover up these murders, according to The Guardian. No known activists could be found via. Internet search.
