Chile

Background

Chile chaired the creation of the Agreement with Costa Rica, but two days before its

official release, they backed down and the agreement was not signed. This situation continues until today.

The Agreement has not yet been signed and the government has announced that they doesn't have any intention to sign it. They have reiterated this in many press points and spaces for dialogue in

social networks. The arguments that the Minister of the Environment and the president have given , have been based on the fact that it infringes on national sovereignty and that

everything included in the agreement is already present in the chilean legislation, which is not the case.

The Environment

1) The lack of access to participation and citizen dialogue in environmental situations. So this would mainly affect the democratic decisions that this issue requires.

2) The lack of justice in environmental matters, which makes Chile a

very weak country in the face of the constant threat of their land exploitation.

3) The persecution and assassination of land defenders and social leaders. Wich in the chilean justice, stays unpunished.

Defenders

Land defenders and social leaders are

being pursued because they are a threat to the interests of the power groups.

In addition, there is no access to participation in decision-making on

environmental issues, neither citizen dialogues on them, which affects the democratic decisions

that we urgently need.
