Africa Needs Real Solutions - Include Fossil Fuels in the Pact!
Summary of the Summit of the Future
The Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024 in New York, aims to redefine global cooperation and governance. This pivotal event will culminate in the creation of an inter-governmentally agreed Pact for the Future, addressing sustainable development, international peace, technology, youth engagement, and global governance. The summit represents a crucial opportunity to modernize global structures and foster trust and collaboration among nations, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
Campaign by Global Citizen and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty
Global Citizen and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty have launched a campaign urging world leaders to include the phase-out of fossil fuels in the Pact for the Future. This campaign highlights the urgency of addressing the root causes of climate change and advocates for bold commitments to transition away from fossil fuels, ensuring a safer and greener world for future generations.
FFF Africa's Call to Action
FFF Africa is joining the call by Global Citizen and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to ensure the inclusion of fossil fuels in the Pact for the Future. Africa has been on the frontline of the climate crisis and conflict for decades. It is disheartening to read that the very driver of the climate crisis is not mentioned in the draft for the Pact of the Future.
Our continent is undergoing a massive transformative change where the youth are ready to participate in the nation-building of their countries. With unemployment and living standards on the rise, it has become unimaginable what type of future Africa’s unborn will have to face. Aside from the rising living standards, the effects of climate breakdown continue to ravage the continent, making it impossible to recover.
Conflicts driven by resource extraction are fueling the displacement of millions of Africans. With the shrinking capacity of habitable lands, it is vital to preserve biodiversity, indigenous knowledge, and implement solutions tailored to Africa's current needs.
Conclusion
The inclusion of fossil fuels in the Pact for the Future is critical for addressing the root causes of climate change and ensuring a sustainable and just future for Africa. FFF Africa calls on all Africans to raise their voices and support this campaign, ensuring that African perspectives and needs are represented in this pivotal global agreement.
Sincerely,
FFF Africa
