In the Lunarejo Valley in Rivera, Uruguay, a teacher named Samuel Costa, who has only eight students, is gaining national recognition. At Rural School No. 29, he encouraged the children to create a YouTube channel called TeleLunarejo, where they share daily activities, from cooking recipes to English lessons. This initiative earned Samuel the 2021 Uruguayan Teacher Award from the ReachingU Foundation, which supports educational opportunities for vulnerable children.
Costa commutes 80 kilometers daily to the school and has been there for four years. The school, which runs from 10 AM to 3 PM, serves children aged 6 to 11. Although the area is rural and sparsely populated, making it challenging to attract students, Costa has created a multi-grade learning environment that benefits all students.
In addition to teaching, Costa also handles other duties like cleaning and cooking. The idea for the YouTube channel began in 2018 to showcase the students' work during a local fair. The channel has helped the children develop communication skills and confidence.
The award includes $5,000 to strengthen the project, and plans are underway to create a mini studio for content creation. The ReachingU Foundation hopes this recognition will inspire other teachers to showcase their work and connect with a global community of educators.
