Using Layer 2 (L2)

Layer 2 systems are built on top of existing blockchain architecture, interacting directly with the chain in some fashion. These systems are often referred to as “Layer 2" or "L2 Scaling Solutions”, as their primary function is to help Layer 1 systems scale up past their inherent limitations.

Layer 2 scaling solutions are protocols built on top of existing blockchains, primarily to solve transaction speed and scaling difficulties for larger networks like Ethereum and Bitcoin. This is done by either compartmentalizing certain actions from the mainchain into closed systems, or separating functions from the mainchain onto separate chains known as “Side-Chains”.

Transferring tokens on L2

For example, in Metamask, you can connect to a L2 network, lets say Xnet on polygon.

Move tokens from your Ethereum Mainnet account to your Xnet account.

You can select your transfer mode between "PoS Bridge" and "Plasma Bridge".

While we recommend the PoS Bridge (3-hour transaction) for its short transaction times and robust security, selecting the Plasma Bridge will afford the highest level of security at the cost of transaction time (7 day transaction). Either option is secure and backed by the Polygon team's robust system of validators.

Clicking "Transfer", an estimation of the gas fees for the transaction will appear.

You will then be presented with a withdrawal estimate.

Withdrawing tokens from Layer 2

If you've decided that you would like to transfer some Xnet or other tokens off of the Polygon network and back to the Ethereum chain.

In the token bridge page, double check that you've selected the correct token to withdraw from Polygon, then make sure that you are withdrawing from Polygon to Ethereum.

nce your transaction has been initialized, it will reach the first checkpoint. This should take between 45 - 60 minutes.

Once your transaction has reached the checkpoint, you will be prompted to switch over to the Ethereum network in Metamask and confirm transaction fees.

Depending on your withdrawal method, this challenge period will take a matter of hours or up to 7 days. Unless using the Plasma bridge, Xnet withdrawals should only take a few hours on PoS.
