PC Muñoz, Director of Education & Community Engagement
Hi PC,
For Week 2 of "Our Roots Run Deep," you'll showcase the impact and growth of our education programs through four short videos. While we've provided sample scripts below, these are starting points to spark ideas - your authentic voice and direct experience will tell our education story best.
Your videos:
Education Week Introduction (60s)
Golden State of Song Focus (60s)
Education Programs Overview (60s)
Teaching Artist Introduction (15-30s)
(Optional) Giving Tuesday Ask (60s)
Let's look at some approaches for each...

1. EDUCATION WEEK INTRODUCTION VIDEO (60s)

As Director of Education and Community Engagement at the Freight, I have the privilege of seeing how music education transforms our community every day. From elementary school classrooms where Golden State of Song brings California history alive, to evening workshops where generations share musical traditions, we're creating connections through music.
This year alone, we've reached 823 fourth graders across multiple districts, provided over 450,000 minutes of music education, and welcomed more than 1,000 students and singers through our doors. Our programs now reach every Berkeley Unified elementary school and are expanding into West Contra Costa School District.
But we're just getting started. Your support helps us develop new programs, reach more students, and ensure music education remains accessible to all. Join us in making these opportunities possible for everyone in our community.

2. GOLDEN STATE OF SONG VIDEO (60s)

Approach: This video highlights our flagship education program by focusing on its documented growth and innovative approach. We'll reference the mini-documentary as proof of impact while emphasizing program expansion and cultural preservation elements.
Key Talking Points:
Program's unique approach to teaching history through music
Growth from single classroom to district-wide implementation
Multiple cultural modules (Ohlone Sisters, WWII module)
Cross-district expansion
California State Library support

Our Golden State of Song program shows how music can transform the way students experience history. As you can see in our recent mini-documentary about the WWII Japanese Incarceration module, we're not just teaching history – we're bringing it to life through song and story.
What started in Berkeley classrooms now reaches every elementary school in the district, and we're expanding into West Contra Costa. From indigenous traditions with the Ohlone Sisters to immigrant journeys, each module helps students connect deeply with California's rich cultural heritage.
With support from partners like the California State Library, we're developing new modules and reaching more students. But there are so many more stories to tell, so many more traditions to preserve and share. This is how we ensure cultural heritage lives on through the next generation.

3. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS OVERVIEW VIDEO (60s)

Approach: This video showcases the breadth of our education and community engagement initiatives. Using our year-in-review statistics, we'll demonstrate how the Freight creates multiple pathways for musical learning and cultural connection across generations.
Key Talking Points:
Full spectrum of programs (classes, workshops, chorus, jams)
Year-in-review impact numbers
Multi-generational engagement
Community accessibility
Cultural preservation through participation

The Freight's commitment to education and community engagement takes many forms. Through our Freight Singers Community Chorus, evening classes, workshops, and regular jams, we're creating spaces where everyone can discover and share music together.
The numbers tell a powerful story: over 450,000 minutes of music education delivered this year alone. Our 21 workshops have served 329 students, while 50 community jams have brought together more than 300 musicians. Between our class sessions and chorus programs, we've welcomed over 1,000 students and singers.
But it's more than numbers – it's about preserving traditions while creating new ones. From online lectures to pre-show talks, from beginning ukulele to advanced vocal techniques, we're building a community where musical heritage thrives and new connections flourish every day.

4. TEACHING ARTIST INTRODUCTION VIDEO (15-30s)

Approach: This shorter video serves as a bridge to individual teaching artist testimonials, emphasizing how our instructors embody both expertise and our commitment to cultural preservation. The format should be flexible enough to introduce either specific instructors or groups of teaching artists.
Key Talking Points:
Teaching artist expertise
Connection to traditions
Educational excellence
Cultural authenticity
Community impact

5. GIVING TUESDAY VIDEO (60s)

Purpose: Connect education impact to Giving Tuesday opportunity

Today on Giving Tuesday, I want to share what your support means for music education at the Freight. When you give, you're helping us bring programs like Golden State of Song to more classrooms, develop new learning modules, and ensure these vital programs reach students across the Bay Area.
This year, we've reached 823 fourth graders, teaching California history through music. Through these lessons, we're not just creating engaging learning experiences – we're preserving cultural heritage for future generations. Each student who learns an Ohlone song or understands Japanese American history through music carries these traditions forward.
Your Giving Tuesday gift helps us expand these impactful programs while ensuring cultural traditions continue to thrive in our community. Join us in making music education accessible to all.
