Dear Freight & Salvage Community,
Standing on our historic stage recently, I found myself reflecting on the thousands of performances, stories, and connections that have flourished here since 1968. As your new Executive Director, I'm humbled to be part of the Freight's continuing story – a story that belongs to all of us.
Our roots truly do run deep in Berkeley. For 56 years, the Freight has been more than a venue; we've been a living archive of musical traditions, a classroom for curious minds, and a gathering place where community happens through music. From weekly jams to world-class performances, from youth education to senior programs, the Freight creates spaces where everyone belongs.
As we close 2024, we're experiencing remarkable momentum. Our post-pandemic recovery is well underway, with robust attendance at concerts, growing education programs, and exciting new initiatives on the horizon. December alone will feature 15 extraordinary shows culminating in our DeFord Bailey Legacy Festival, demonstrating both our commitment to tradition and our vision for the future.
Yet this is just the beginning. We're reimagining our spaces, expanding our programs, and finding new ways to serve our community. Our website redesign, building improvements, and enhanced education offerings are all part of ensuring the Freight remains vital and accessible for generations to come.
Today, I invite you to deepen your roots with us. Whether through attending shows, supporting our programs, or sharing your Freight story, you're part of growing this extraordinary community resource. Every contribution, every shared memory, every moment of connection strengthens our collective future.
Thank you for being part of our story. Together, we'll ensure the Freight's roots continue to nurture and strengthen our community for the next 56 years and beyond.

With gratitude,
Clayton Shelvin
Executive Director Freight & Salvage
