Cellular Respiration
What is Respiration
Respiration
- the process by which cells break down simple food molecules sucha s sugar and release the energy they contain.
During respiration, cells break down to release energy
Storing & Releasing Energy
During photosynthesis plants capture the energy from sunlight and “save” it in the form of carbohydrates including sugars and starches
When cells need the stored energy they withdraw it by breaking down the carbohydrates in the process of respiration
Breathing & Respiration
oxygen we breathe is required for cellular respiration
The 2 Stages of Respiration
stage 1: in cytoplasm, break down glucose, no oxygen required
stage 2: in mitochondria, break down glucose even
more
, oxygen required
each stage releases energy but 2 releases the most
The Respiration Equation
sugar + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy 1
Comparing Photosynthesis & Respiration
Photosynthesis & Respiration can be thought of as opposite processes
