Operation ASREC

Objectives

Train manual and automated flight skills
Practice mission‑planning workflow (weather, NOTAMs, FRAT, briefing)
Build PIC–VO communication proficiency
Conduct waiver‑compliant operations under 107.51(b)
Strengthen hazard identification and mitigation skills
Practice emergency procedures (lost link, RTL, battery, flyaway)
Roles and Responsibilities
Pilot in Command (PIC)
Description
Final authority over mission
Ensures Part 107 + waiver compliance
Conducts preflight inspection and briefing
Maintains aircraft control
Maintains duplex communication with VO
Visual Observer
Description
Maintains VLOS
Calls out hazards and boundary proximity
Maintains continuous two‑way communication
Alerts PIC to unsafe conditions
GCS Operator

Monitors battery, GPS, link quality

Risk Assessment

Emergency and Contingency Procedures

Lost link: Goes to rally point until connection is regained
Low battery: Voltmeter beeps until aircraft lands
Flyaway: VO calls direction; PIC attempts override; report if boundary breach
Crash: Secure site, document, notify instructor
Weather deterioration: Abort and land immediately
Emergency contacts: Instructor, Purdue Police, FAA regional office

Compliance and Approvals

PIC must hold valid Part 107 certificate
Recurrent training within 24 months
107.51(b) waiver requirements:
Duplex PIC–VO communication
Boundary file loaded
VLOS maintained
Documented mitigations
Attach waiver PDF + highlight key sections
