the choice to make Elias and Jenny into a lesbian couple was a specific one. I think the way that Jenny cheats on Elias in the original could really easily become a masculinity contest in the way that their relationship plays out. I liked the idea of actually stripping down the inner conflict that Elias has to more than a ‘dick-measuring contest.’ The line “And he had a giant cock?” means more to me coming from a lesbian than a man, because it obviously isn’t about that, you know?
I also think dealing with more feminine anger is just more fun for me as a director, and I can find more personal graces to give to the character than I can with men. Just being self-aware about it.
