Captioning

I use Zoom’s built-in captioning plugin. This is not ideal because it makes mistakes. When I’m funded, I’ll get proper live captioning.

Pluralism, Crip Time

All workshops are repeated to align with different time zones. This means participants don’t need to interrupt their rest patterns, and are more likely to be able to attend if they miss an event due to illness.

This is based on my own experiences of trying to attend online events from the Southern Hemisphere and having recurring illness.

Breaks: There is a short break in the middle of the workshops. But there are some activities that require time-limited engagement in small groups.

Spaced Events: The workshops are held two weeks apart, with a break also between new events.

Refund: Refunds are available up to the day before on the Humantix website, and can be issued on the day. This is because illness can happen any time. Workshops are also repeated, so there will likely be another opportunity in the future.

I only take personal information such as a name and email if you opt-in to the newsletter, and sign-up for a workshop through Humantix. I won’t sell your data, ever.

Sliding Scale Pricing

Multiple countries around the world have an economic system designed to exploit the majority of people to benefit a few. This means people don’t have enough to survive, let alone flourish. I would rather have people participate at a price they can afford or for free than not attend because of a lack of funds.

Community Tickets

For those who currently have a secure income or greater wealth, they can contribute by purchasing a ticket to cover a free community member.

Free, Shared Resources

It’s important to make information available about fellow communities and techniques, and potentially uplift the livelihood of all those cited.

No Google Analytics

“Data Protection Authorities across the EU are ruling Google Analytics illegal to use under the GDPR.” I did originally sign up to Google Analytics, then found out from the RadHR form that it is not privacy-compliant. So, now I’m not using Google Analytics on this site. If I want to use analytics that respects your privacy, I’ll use a GA alternative such as Matomo.

I use the principles of Liz’s “Critical Response Process” when designing group feedback sessions. It intervenes in respondents slipping into a “fix-it” mentality and empowers the artist.

Dark Mode

I’m using dark mode on the websites, slides, and games to reduce energy consumption on my and each user’s devices.

High Contrast

I’m using high contrast on the websites, slides, and games.

I would like to add the ability for users to customise the colour combination themselves.

In the slides, the smallest text size I work with on my slides is 12 point.

Left Justification

I left-justify and break up text so the eye (for Western readers) has the least distance to travel to each new line.

Payment rates are agreed before work, and are based on either the contractor’s nominated rate or applicable Union or Guild rates.

I switched to a bank that doesn’t invest in fossil fuels, uses recycled plastic, has fair rates, good service, etc.

The only issue is that they don’t have an international payment code, only an external transfer service.

Prosocial Design

I’m considering using a platform designed around prosocial, participatory relations, which is open-source and non-profit. Since it will be unfamiliar to many, I’ll schedule interaction times. If needed, I’ll switch to Discord as both games and filmmaking communities use it.

I use Humantix for our bookings because they put effort into accessibility, and they donate 100% of their profits to charities. Although charity is a distraction from the core problems, and the latest announcement of Hugh Jackman as the Head of Impact is concerning (given the dishonest way he split from his wife).

Free, Low-cost, Transparent Rates

I use Coda instead of Notion because of the hidden costs (”dark patterns”) involved with running Notion if you have more than one person using it. Coda only charges the person creating pages, and is free for those to edit.
