How to Succeed

How to get the most out of this course

To get the most out of spaced repetition and references back to previous content, I recommend watching this course or reading these notes beginning-to-end. For those of you watching along on , feel free to play with the speed of playback. If you are not able to attempt to answer the questions I pose during the course, I recommend slowing down or pausing because these questions are selected strategically to help you identify and correct gaps in your own mental model.
And of course, there is no substitute for doing the practice problems and playing with the example code! This is a hands-on practical course so if you watched end-to-end and did not type anything, you are not getting the full experience. However, if all you are able to do is watch the videos, that is OK too. Just don’t be surprised if you watch me implement a solution and then see that problem again and have difficulty coming up with your own solution. Problem solving is like a muscle that needs to be flexed. You won’t get stronger by watching workout videos and sitting on your sofa. At the same time, you won’t make gains effectively if you don’t have guidance from an expert. Make sure you have a healthy balance of expert insights and spending time in your text editor trying things out for yourself.

Why is it so hard to do?

If you want to make yourself stand out from other applicants or colleagues. Be the person that builds, that isn’t shy to break things, and ask questions. Taking responsibility for your own success and being an active participant in your learning can make or break your career in this industry.
But it can be really hard to take those first steps to start building. Why do you think that is?
What are some strategies you plan to do to ensure you are being active and making the most of your learning?

Let’s talk about talking

We are going to start at the beginning to make sure we have a shared foundational understanding and a common language to describe our code before we start ramping up to some of the more complex topics. I will strive alongside you to be precise in my speech when we talk about these topics. Sometimes when I am presenting, I misspeak or I have a typo. If anything is confusing at all, please let me know as we are recording or reach out to me later so that we can all benefit from the correction!
