Assumptions

Communauto assumptions

The calculations related to Communauto in this document assume that:
The plan is used for
3
years (distributes the upfront membership bond over X years).
The weekend rate adds $
0.35
per hour or $
3.5
per day.
The long-distance rate is $
45
for the first day and $
35
for additional days with the distance costs being $
0.21
per kilometre for the first 300km and $
0.13
per kilometre afterward.
Special discounted rates that are affected by the date, time, and seasonality of a trip are ignored or simplified. This is done to allow people to quickly enter their normal annual assuage without the need to specify the exact dates and timings of each trip. This means that:
The default long-distance pricing (see above) uses the high season rates.
Trips either use the weekend rate or not. In the real world, a trip over three-plus days might be partially billed at the weekend rate if it overlaps with a Saturday or Sunday, but accounting for this is too complicated.
The per-minute rate is ignored (i.e. only use trip durations of whole hours).
The workday rate is ignored.
Only round-trip/station-based cars are used, not flex cars. On every plan other than the Open plan, this makes minimal difference to the calculations, since flex cars are when cheaper, which is the case for most trips over four hours.
Only regular vehicles are used, not minivans or family vehicles.
Trips are under 28 days.
There is only one driver on the account.

Vehicle ownership assumptions

The calculations related to vehicle ownership in this document assume that:
My financing math is roughly correct.
The price of gas is stable at $
1.60
per liter.
Fuel efficiency is
7
L/100 km.
Maintenance is $
0.10
per kilometre.
The purchase price or down payment is $
20000
.
The vehicle currently has
50000
kilometres on it.
The lifespan of the vehicle is
300000
kilometres.
If the vehicle is financed:
The principal amount is $
.
The term length is
48
months.
The interest rate is
5.5
percent.
Parking costs $
100
per month.
Insurance costs $
800
per year.
Other fees not listed above total $
per year.
