9. CoRE Annual Survey

At the request of ARUA and The Guild, CoRE-Math has produced a report covering the period from July 2024 to June 2025. The report focuses on collaboration within the cluster.

j. CoRE-Math Questionnaire

CoRE-Math has surveyed the African member nodes. The survey aimed to collect basic information about the departments and the graduate-level training that takes place within them. The questionnaire also included questions about research conducted in the departments, collaborations with stakeholders outside the department, and former and current international interventions to support the departments.

B. Discussion Topics

1. Expansion of CoRE-Math

Proposal for discussion

CoRE-Math aims to expand gradually, admitting new partners strategically, considering, for example, geographic distribution and the potential of new members to contribute to achieving the goals of CoRE-Math. All new partners will be expected to make a commitment to the cluster as part of their membership application.
Please note that also non-members can benefit from CoRE-Math activities.

2. Commitments from CoRE-Math members

Discussion

ARUA and The Guild expect its members to make financial commitments. How could we encourage the universities to make commitments? What could we expect from the African universities?

3. Fundraising

Discussion

These are some avenues CoRE-Math could use for funding as a cluster:
ICMS
Simons Foundation
The European Union (Erasmus+ staff and student exchange, Erasmus+ CBHE, the Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme, etc.)
Philanthropists, e.g., XTX Market
What other funders are there? What activities could we apply for? Here’s a link to our (not recently updated)

4. Website and possible newsletter

Discussion

The CoRE-Math Management Team has created this for collecting news for the CoRE-Math website. Reminders will be sent to the node coordinators on a regular basis. Would it be a good idea to start a newsletter for CoRE-Math? If so, how frequently should the newsletter be sent out?

5. Physical Meeting for CoRE-Math

Proposal for discussion

The CoRE-Math Management Team suggests that we should organise a meeting for the cluster in connection with the Arusha conference. The meeting could provide an opportunity to
Learn about what’s going on in the different departments;
Work together on some applications;
Explore synergies between different initiatives;
Discuss future plans.

6. Summer School 2027

Discussion

Which university would like to organise the 2027 school? Are there any proposals for topics? Should choosing the topic be the responsibility of the hosting node?

7. Gender Matters

Discussion

CoRE-Math aims to achieve a 50/50 gender balance. To reach this goal, we need to have a plan. Should we create a working group for gender matters? Could we have more women coordinators or deputy coordinators?

8. CoRE-Math Questionnaire

Discussion

We plan to bring up the report at the next SC meeting. Everyone is welcome to send feedback to Barbara. Pleae think about whether aything missing in the draft report and how we should use the report.
