View Distortions

Halation is when light spreads beyond its intended area. This is especially noticeable in VR when there are high contrast situations, like white text on a black background. In addition to causing an unintentional visual effect, halation also distorts the shapes of letters. This distortion can harm legibility, for example by reducing the difference between a “c” and an “o”.

Chromatic aberration is when a lens fails to focus all component colors to the same point [41]. It’s an issue that should be taken care of in a few years, but current VR headsets still face it. Seeing this effect can make people lose immersion, and also feel visual discomfort due to the bright, contrasting colors visible. This is a hardware issue, and it’s most noticeable when there is high contrast, like white text on a black background.
