Line Pointer

Loading…
The Line Plus Dot Pointer shoots a line from the center of the user’s hand to the current UI element their hand is pointing at.
There are a few factors to the line pointer:
Factors
Search
Follow Speed
The line can be modified to instantly follow the user’s hand when they move it, or to take a little time to catch up to the user’s hand when they move it. It’s expected that either having the line instantly or very quickly follow the user’s hand would be best. It’s expected that a slow follow time would be distracting and hurt overall usability.
Width
The line’s width can be constant, or it can be different at its start and its end. It’s expected that a thin overall width, with a tapering effect would be best at drawing the user’s attention to the end of the line.
Color
The line’s color can be constant, or it can be a gradient between multiple colors. It’s expected that gradient between a dark and light color would be the most effective at directing the user’s eyes to the line pointer, and then to the end of the line.
Activation Method
The line pointer can activate UI elements by the user either holding the pointer on the element for a short amount of time the moving it away, or by slightly shaking the line.

Testing
Methodology
The line follow speed can either be instant, or range from a factor of 0.1 to 20, with 20 being the fastest follow speed.
Through a preliminary evaluation, these were the most distinct speeds:
-Instant
-0.1
Testing for user satisfaction, task completion time.
