True Stories
Usually, we only see the attributes that make up someone’s external context—what they say or do, their title, and physical characteristics. To build deep trust, however, and to understand other people in an authentic way, we need to understand their internal context—their values, motivations, what gets them up in the morning, the things that have made them who they are.
So now in your groups, you’re going to share the true story of your life and how it led you to where you are today. Most people never actually have the opportunity to share the story of their life with others in an uninterrupted way. At best, we only share snippets. But if we’re going to work together, grow together, and learn together, it’s critical to know where each of us is coming from. When you know someone’s story, you can create truly meaningful bonds.
Prompt: Tell the story of your life and how you came to do the work you do today. In 4 minutes. Not the book report version. The story of the unique experiences that shaped you as an individual on this planet. Where you grew up, who raised you, the random events that shaped your future, the struggles you’ve faced, or the transformational moments that led you to where you are today. Whatever it is that is meaningful to you, and that reveals something about who you are as a person.
I’m going to keep time for the whole group. I’ll let you know once the 3 minutes are done. Then, the listeners of the group will have 1 minute to reflect on the story and offer reactions.
Before we get started, I’ll give you one minute to decide who’s going first, second, third, and fourth. (pause)
Does everyone know your order? Ok. Let the storytelling begin.
