MVP - Identify the Minimum Functionality required to validate that you are heading in the right direction.
Process to indentify the MVP feature set with top 3/5 features for each benefit:
Practice Divergent Thinking : For evey benefit in Value Proposition, list as many feature ideas as possible without any judgement of the Idea
Practice Convergent Thinking : Evaluate the ideas and decide which ones you think are the most promising.
For each benefit, prioritize the list of feature ideas
Score the idea on expected customer value
Define User Stories : Features with Benefits
Template for writing user story:
As a [type of user]
I want to [do something]
so that I can [desired benefit]
Guidelines for writing good user stories - Bill Wake coined an acronym “ INVEST”
Break down features down into Feature Chunks
Goal is to find ways to reduce scope and build only the most valuable pieces of each feature
Don’t work with items that are large in scope
Breakdown items into smaller, atomic components
Reduce scope as much as possible
Smaller Batch Sizes are better
Working in smaller batches, increases the velocity because they enable faster feedback, which reduces the risk and waste.
Scoping with Story Points
Story points is a type of currency to estimate the relative size of different user stories
Break down stories into smaller stories, if any large user story is above a specific threshold value
Using Return on Investment to Prioritize
In product - Customer Value Created ( Y Axis) is the return against the Development Effort ( X-Axis)
Approximating ROI
Deciding on MVP Candidate
First, list the prioritized feature chucks for each benefit
Second, Decide on the minimum set of functionality that will resonate with customers.
Even in the MVP you should have all the “Must Haves”
Build the PB differentiator that you want to compete against, in the below case it’s PB3 so you consider to build features of PB3A for MVP
Don’t plan for more than 2 versions of features, as you will not know the customer feedback.
