analogy (coined by Adam Smith in the 18th century). What most people don’t know is that he wrote extensively on the conditions of the proper functioning of the Invisible Hand. A few of which include: a sense of ethics and sympathy in the population, the prevention of monopolies, and government intervention in some cases. With this manifesto, we hope to capture the spirit of the original conception of the Invisible Hand - along with the concept of Asabiyyah. Using these two guiding lights to build a solid foundation, we are ready to progress. To break down out analogy - the “Invisible Hand” - we have to have a hand - or five fingers. We’ve broken this down to an analogy of five fingers.
the hand
onefinger:: “point(er)“:: what is the point? ultimately, it’s you. whether you’re trying to save your soul from the damnation of hell, or whether you’re reading books on economics written by nobel prize winners such as “identity economics,” or “animal spirits.” the starting point for everything is the “canvas of you:’ your intelligence, friends, character, beliefs, underlying narrratives, hobbies, passions, etc. all these things coalesce to create you. now that you have you (the point), then what is what you do (the pointer)? we hope you bring you (the point) to us (the pointer). focus on all the sauce that makes you, and make something efficient and effective with it. this is the starting point of the hand.
twofingers::peace :: if one finger is identity and three fingers (spoiler alert) your nation, then what is two fingers? right in between -your small world communities - work, play, worship, and family. these communities keep us sane and (hopefully) happy. they give us peace. they are also a communication channel that naturally - without us knowing it - transmit knowledge, habits, beliefs, and character. for the proper functioning of the invisible hand, our small world communities are critical. we hope to harness these bonds to both crystallize our creative vision into knowledge and action (banking on these communities to do a lot of the lifting for us) and also to create organic “marketing” to invite to people to our mission and work.
threefingers:: “tres” :: patriotism. tres implies the most effective way to contribute to society. the break down: the most efficient shot in basketball is from the post. however to score consistently from there, you have to be a big man. likewise in society; if you’re not a big guy - lauded politician, wealthy investor, or ceo of a large corporation - then comparatively your powers are limited. the second most effective shot in basketball is a three pointer (hence tres) - which the little guy can master. the analogy is that we’re making a “tres,” or the most effective way to leave a lasting contribution to society.
fourfingers:: “quadrivium”:: what is the quadrivium? Originally it was the study of mathematics after the foundations of language (the trivium) were established. In this analogy - the foundations of our language is our board(s) (where we get our vision). from there we proceed to action, our ends being in the domains of biz/dvlpt - or our language turned technical action [the quadrivium].
five fingers:: “the Vth” :: if the analogy of the Invisible Hand is followed, the fifth finger implies a complete hand - or the completion of the Invisible Hand. This meaning we’ve now done our part and the Hand of Providence is now in control. A corollary to that is the Invisible Hand can now make a fist. We intend to fight - not for supremacy, authority, revolution, or rebellion - but with etiquette and intelligence: sincerely for the betterment of those we care for & our own cultivation.
conclusion
In conclusion, we’ll make a small note on ethics. Adam Smith wrote a treatises on ethics (Theory of Moral Sentiments); George Washington wrote a book on etiquette at the age of thirteen. From the angle of business/economics & from the perspective of patriotism - character - is paramount and in the lineage. The world is rife with secular ethics: from liberalism to positivism to patriotism - all in their various manifestations. And of course, we have our faith traditions. From each and any of these, every individual drinks as he deems fittest. This is all noted because our organization stresses character and ethics - follow your own path and together we are united. That is the Asabiyyah Consensus.
