Horse chestnut seed extract (standardized to 50 mg of escin, the active compound) twice daily may reduce leg volume and edema in patients with chronic venous insufficiency in place of or in addition to compression.
Horse chestnut seed extract stimulates the release of prostaglandins which cause venoconstriction, decreasing the permeability of vessel walls to low molecular proteins, water, and electrolytes.
