Ratio is a way of comparing two or more quantities. Ratios can be used to compare costs, weights and sizes. These quantities can be in any type of unit but have to be the same to each other, if one is gram, the other is also, etc.
For example, the ingredients of a smoothie is 3 apple and 1 banana. So the ratio is 3:1.
→ 3 for apple and 1 banana
We can also have more than 2 numbers in the ratio. For example: 2:3:1 → The ingredient of a smoothie is 2 bananas, 3 apple and 1 mango.
a) Ratio to Fractions
We can convert ratio to fractions:
→ The first number as the numerator and the second number as the denominator.
b) Simplifying to smallest form
Simplifying ratio is the same as doing it to fractions. We divide all parts of the ratio by their highest common factor.
For example:
We need to simplify 5:10 to its lowest form.
The highest common factor of 5 and 10 is 5. So we use the 2 numbers and divide it.
Answer:
= 1:2
c) Ratios cannot be in decimal
Importation notes, ratio cannot be in decimal:
1.5 : 1 is wrong
In this case, we need to make both a whole number. The decimal number here is 1.5, so we can just times 2 both to get the correct answer.
1.5 : 1 = 3:2
Answer:
3:2
