Engineering at Coda

Team structure

What we do and how we organize into teams.
At Coda, we work on flat, decentralized teams, which gives us the freedom and flexibility to approach, own, and solve problems creatively. Engineers, designers, and product managers work closely together on all teams. Things move quickly here, so if you have a great idea and the willpower to take it to fruition, you can effect great change. In the past year, our engineering team grew from 30 to 70 and is on pace to grow way above 100 to help build the amazing things we have planned for the future.
We are structured into 3 main engineering areas: LED, DocX, and BizPlat.
The BizPlat (Business Platform) area runs the platform on top of which Coda is built. Our specialist engineering teams: Site Reliability (SRE) and Platform Engineering, Data Engineering, Security Engineering, Internal Tools & Infrastructure, and IT are all part of BizPlat. The BizPlat area also contains Coda’s monetization and “Teams” team. Monetization focuses on Coda’s billing infrastructure and acts as a growth team driving revenue growth, working closely with sales and customers. Teams owns the team experience in Coda, spanning systems include the document list, search, workspaces, folders, etc.
The DocX (Document Experience) area contains all the teams responsible for the core Coda document application. DocX is structured into:
Customer-facing feature teams that work full stack, but bias a bit more towards frontend work.
Performance, formula engine, data model, and infrastructure-focused teams that own some customer-facing features and bias more towards backend work.
A mobile team.
And a growth team focused on the document experience for new users.
LED (Leads Ecosystem Discovery) contains multiple teams that connect Coda with the rest of the world.
The promotion team is focused on bringing in new users to Coda (leads) with different techniques including search engine optimization, machine learning-driven search engine marketing, and growth hacking. This team works very closely with our marketing team.
Our Packs Platform and Publishing teams are building a powerful ecosystem of 3rd party developers and publishers to extend the functionality of Coda. This includes the Coda SDK (including our public API), Pack maker tools, and publishing features.
Our discovery team is focused on helping customers discover the most relevant documents, templates, and Packs.
