In the world of maternal health tech, a critical issue plaguing women of color, particularly Black women, is the systemic disparity in accessing quality maternal care. This often-overlooked problem covertly deprives these women of the fundamental right to safe pregnancies, trust in healthcare systems, and equitable maternal outcomes.
Dr. Yamicia Connor, a distinguished women's health physician and innovator, is at the forefront of combating maternal mortality among pregnant Black individuals. You will join her in exploring the perceptions of the Black female body through history and today. The forced reproduction during slavery gave rise to the "Capitalized Womb" concept, illustrating how the control over Black women's bodies is deeply entrenched in the fabric of American racism.
She will then work through a reimagining of maternal care using a 3-point framework: (1) developing groundbreaking clinical care models that include real-time patient safeguards, (2) enhancing patient empowerment through education, and (3) forging robust community partnerships to infuse pregnancy care with joy and dignity.
To confront the challenges of systemic healthcare disparities and maternal health inequities, we invite you to explore Dr. Connor's innovative methods. By incorporating these effective strategies in your work, you can transform the existing paradigm, ensuring safe, respectful, and equitable maternal healthcare experiences.
Engaging with Dr. Yamicia Connor's insights and methodologies will enable participants to
(1) Acquire a clear understanding of the fundamental causes and current dynamics that fuel the maternal mortality crisis.
(2) Apply contextual understanding to design, refine, and evaluate clinical models that address specific, tangible problems in maternal healthcare.
(3) Adopt a comprehensive, action-driven framework to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centric clinical care.
