Job description
Growth Role
About the Role
You will join the Growth team and own the image and voice of the Village platform. You’ll be at the forefront of innovative web3 growth technologies (programmatic referrals, token-based incentives, NFT-based products) that will define how companies get built and grow for years to come. You will be one of the first ten employees at a mission-driven and fast-growing startup. You are ambitious and hard-working, but you (like us!) also believe in putting people first and having a huge amount of fun while you do your job 😁 .
Reporting to the Head of Growth, you’ll be working on a small growth team (3 total including you and the CEO) to build Village’s marketing strategy and engine from scratch. You’ll be working with a team that’s done this before and knows the value of investing in the entire marketing funnel, so you’ll spend less time convincing and more time building.
You are a jack of all trades across the marketing spectrum, and feel right at home in a fast paced startup culture. If something doesn’t exist yet (and most things don’t), you’re excited to build it. You are autonomous and excited about taking on big, ambiguous problem spaces. You have design skills, but you’re also deeply knowledgeable about driving traffic through paid, organic search, and building the most powerful content strategy in web3.
You believe in the power of web3 and Village’s mission to build a user-owned economy, but you also maintain a healthy skepticism of only building web3 for web3’s sake alone.
You care about more than creating a growth machine, though. You love contributing to a culture where people love to work! (❤️) As one of the first employees, you’ll be integral to the long-term culture of Village and future employees will rely on you as a role model. You’ll be empathetic, hard-working, passionate, good at giving constructive feedback and, of course, having lots of fun.

We encourage you to drop us a line even if you feel over- or under-qualified. We want to find the best people to help us build this Village no matter who they are. We have a lot of different areas of responsibility and we are always happy to brainstorm with you about what would be the best fit.
Village Labs is an equal opportunity employer. We believe everyone should feel great about being their authentic selves at Village–this is the only way to do our best work! We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We believe that great employees come from diverse backgrounds.
Founding Partner at Village Labs
We're partnering with the best founders in the world to build game-changing businesses in the Village ecosystem. The next generation of category-defining businesses will be built with web3 architecture; Village allows ambitious founders to make them a reality.
You'll be a founding network partner on Village. That means you'll have the autonomy to build and grow your own business, but access to the world's most sophisticated L1 & L2 web3 technology and the support of a world-class team to make it a reality. If selected as a Village founding partner, you'll have significant early upside in both your own business and the larger Village ecosystem.
Come change the world (for real).
We believe the future of commerce is user-owned. It's a future where suppliers, creators, workers, & freelancers own more of the upside of the value they create & pay less to intermediaries.
Say 👋 to Village. We’re building some of the world's most sophisticated L1 blockchain infra & L2 protocols to create a platform for user-owned commerce that'll shape how people buy and sell goods and services on the internet for years to come.
We make it easy for any business or supplier group to build and grow user-owned networks. You can think of user-owned networks as fairer and more efficient marketplace platforms without intermediaries. Instead, they use web3 tech so users can transact directly, grow exponentially, and, actually own the platforms they do business on based on the value they contribute.
This is a big deal! User-ownership will bring about a step-change improvement in efficiency that hasn’t been seen since the early days of the internet.
Our founding team has built SaaS, crypto, eCommerce and marketplace companies, and is backed by some of the world’s top crypto & venture investors.
We need the best builders in the world to come show us what's possible.

Questions for Alex
It’s a little hard to gauge exactly what part of the ecosystem you guys are working on, even if we narrow down to “user-owned marketplace”. Do you have traction with a specific project or product (either one in-house, or something you’re developing for a third party). Do you have an idea of who else is working on this in the space — who are the competitors? The biggest thing about building these radically new products (and even sometimes when they’re not so radical), there is a big risk of being too early, it’s maybe a bigger a risk as being too late, since by then you might run out of money or people. What’s the timeline in terms of launches (and accompanying growth) look like? I noticed a patent that was filed with the USPTO and I think I saw Village Platforms was incorporated in Delaware. Was there a reason for filing in Delaware (other than speed)? Related to that, I’ll use your answer to segway into both fundraising and hiring. Have you got any plans to raise funds, do you think you’ll need to, what’s the timeline around this? What do you think are the biggest problems you face right now to build and scale. Where do you need most help right now (and maybe where you think it will change in the coming 3-6-12 months).
Background
Born raised SA
Marketing & Communication in South Africa
Taiwan 3 years, studied Mandarin
1y internship at Smithsonian
China 2 years
Startup life started in 2011 in SA, PayFast. Started in the same way as Ebay — payments.
Built first crypto integration into payment processor
Bought first bitcoin at 103 dollars
Joined Luno team, four people around table. Responsible initially for marketing, comms, business development (South Africa, Nigeria, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, UK) and filled all those roles, remaining with strategy and communications. Company got sold to DCG. Team now over 8/900 accross four continents.
Founded my own company to facilitate trading (especially arbitrage trading) and investments since leaving Luno. Found a much better work-life balance and I’m in a great place right now, but I’m itching to get my hands a little dirty again :-)
Why Village? love the industry. The CEO seems to be the right leader for this sort of project. I think there’s lots of opportunity unfolding in the next 3-5 years.
I’ve actually been drawn out of early retirement by a lot of people requesting marketing and content advice. Most of these are building things that I think fundementally won’t work (some of them appear to be downright scams even) but it opened my eyes a bit to this perfect overlap of what I’m good at, what I like doing, and what other people need (and maybe what other people aren’t great at doing). It’s a weird sensation to be “wanted”, to have this skillset that others need, but it’s probably an easy one to act on if it’s an industry that you find interesting and intellectually stimulating.
Questions for Reid
The obvious starting point would be something where there’s a marketplace with either side unhappy (say, Uber or Doordash), that’s a good place to start, but obviously that’s a very hard nut to crack.
Lower friction would be job marketplaces (like Fiverr and Upwork or Braintrust) but I see the same problems of liquidity here. After that immediate fulfulment, like the sale of software, scripts, themes, photos and other digital content. Maybe adult centertainment and porn too. The next hurdle would be fon-fulfilment marketplaces like Ebay.
🙋♂️ What’s the roadmap for product launches; which will determine the target audience.
🙋♂️ What are the biggest obstacles or tasks that you need this role to fill? Who has been doing most of this up to now? I’d like to get a sense of if it’s taking over from someone (or a few people) or setting up more than that.
🙋♂️ Do you have a current content calendar or press calendar? How is content chosen and created and distributed right now?
🙋♂️ What are the internal marketing OKRs or KPIs? Can you maybe speak as to what needs to be achieved in the next 3-6-12 months, especially with a focus on communications and marketing?

Braintrust. Nonprofit entity. A sheperd to govern the protocol. For profit entities can run on top of it. Like Eth foundation.
