Vince to talk to Julian and John by Tuesday
Participants: Sharlene, Aria
Info session about service opportunities, description of all of the activities happening, description of Ruhi. Invited them both to Ruhi - both agreed to join
Conversation based on first two paragraphs of youth conference materials - general discussion about role of their generation - sense of justice, networks, ability to channel their energy for causes; spoke a bit about the challenges of social media, some of the things they would like to be seen changed in their neighborhood (eg the way women are treated) - discussion on how moral education can help to get to the root of this - reference to the jy service project to raise awareness on gender equality - joined the service activity, where Aria immediately began to help out
Participants: Aria, Patrik, John [Sayem]
Brief conversation about the material and spiritual dimensions of life
Brief intro to Ruhi, description of its purpose and intro to some of the sections and how it would relate to their service - connection between spiritual and material
Time reflecting on first paragraph of youth conference materials - going more deeply into the role of their generation (since Aria reflected on this last week, she was asked to share some of their reflections previously and to help guide some of the conversation); reflected on some of the negative social forces that exist in society (social media etc), this prompted a conversation on how it is the responsibility of youth to assist those younger than them to be able to understand these negative forces and to navigate them, to question them and to not passively adopt them. Also a discussion about some of the positive forces: sense of justice, enthusiasm, influence and ability to bring about change
Because of the artistic inclination of all of the participants, an idea emerged to set up a whatsapp group to exchange poetry - the participants plan to artistically represent the concepts we spoke about this week in time for our next session (whether in the form of a poem, song etc)
Comments about the importance of friendship and how this space could be a team of friends learning together
Brief info session about the activities
Conversation about the role of youth and the contributions they can make to society; the forces that operate on youth at this time of life (inspired by first paragraph of youth conference materials)
Ayan spoke a lot about how he wished someone was there to help guide him when he was younger and he feels serving in such a capacity would be important to him since he has already gone through a lot of the challenges those younger than him are now currently facing
Participants: John, MD, Kumar, Sharlene, Ayan (at end)
Brief intro about the activities with MD and Kumar
John, MD, Kumar, and Sharlene helped the jy with their service project
Ayan was asked to facilitate reading through a session of Breezes with the junior youth. It became apparent that the content was quite challenging for him personally (resigning to the loss of a job before the pension became eligible). There was a need to have a separate conversation and reflect on what confirmation is, to speak more about the aims of the junior youth program, and how change can take root at the level of culture over time - this included a reflection on concepts such as the relationship between material and spiritual progress and the importance of cultivating spiritual qualities from a young age. Reflection: ensuring there is adequate preparation time with youth before asking them to carry out a service and learning more about the nature of accompaniment with different youth
Aria: Assisted with children’s class
Participants: John, Patrik, Bernard, Evelyn, Emma, Md, Kumar
Studied narrative on Jambo from youth conference materials with a view of understanding the vision for our activities but also to learn about the details we should pay attention to in our community. Followed with mapping exercise where the youth listed out some of the main hubs of activity in the neighborhood while a few others drew out a grid of the avenues and streets in the area. Initially the plan was for the youth to accompany the junior youth in the mapping exercise, however, the youth joined the mapping exercise while the junior youth were already engaged in the exercise, making it more challenging for them to take on a “facilitator” role, which is why the youth continued to carry out the exercise separately. This actually ended up being a nice space for the team to brainstorm together.
Participants: Emma, Evelyn, Md, Kumar, Bernard, Ellie, Patrik, Sharlene (at end)
Continued study of first section from the youth conference materials. Among the concepts the group focused on included an exploration of some of the positive and negative social forces operating in the neighborhood. One of the youth (Md) suggested we give more time throughout the week to think about these so we can share them next week. Another concept that was explored was that of a coherent life and how the different elements of life can be viewed as part of a whole, each reinforcing the other. We also had the opportunity to reflect on a twofold moral purpose and explored how service and personal growth can be directly linked to each other. Some of the participants reflected on how some of the clean up activities they did with the jy could help them in their own personal lives. We ended the session by returning to the mapping exercise, this time identifying 1. spaces where we can identify junior youth for when we’re ready to start our own groups, and 2. spaces where we could hold our activities during the winter.
Participants: Ayan, Bernard, Sharlene
Brief discussion about the positive and negative forces in the neighborhood then joined the junior youth for conversations.
Participants: Ayan (with junior youth), John (for second part), Aria, Patrik, Cass (Daniel and Minhajul at very end)
