A bit quirky, sat in the guides seat with his feet in the air most of the night watching stuff on his phone on speaker. Particular about a place to turn the bus around and drove by really large areas where any other driver would have turned around. Defensive when I asked at certain points if we could turn around here so I just let him do his thing. Didn't affect the tour much.

Åge arrived on time (8:28) with a clean and tidy MB. In the beginning it was hard to communicate with him. I would ask him a question, he would give me an answer and then act in a different way. For example "Can I talk with the guests while standing up? Yes, a little. Great, we can drive then (the bus stand still..) Åge, we can go. Okay! (still stands still) Åge, should I sit down? Yes, I can't drive with you standing up. It happened in front of the guests and was a bit awkward. However, throughout the day our communication became better and it was nice to work with him. He's a kind, helpful person and a good driver. He also knows the area very well, since he grew up in Ersfjordbotn.

Andy is an interesting guy. Spent a lot of time smoking outside. He initially refused to turn the engine off if we got strong lights, and only agreed when I got stern with him about it and even then 'only 5 minutes'. Decent driver however, especially given the wind, and definitely wanted the guests to see something almost as much as we did.

Andy is a strange guy. One minute he seems to love driving tours, the next he seems to be getting angry at guests doing small things, and seems very impatient, for example, he opened the door for a guest, the guest would talk to me for a second, and because they didn't hop in within a few seconds, he'd close the door again. At some points he was quite rude with an abrupt announcement on seatbelts over the mic even after we'd checked seatbelts ourselves, and 'told off' a group at the end for wearing spikes in the bus.

He said stuff like “I don’t like this” “You should listen to me” things that make our guides uncomfortable and feel like they are being override. Aslak from Boreal was nice and drove smoothly. We could turn off all lights outside the bus, but after a looong delay, so not so easy to be reactive and take pictures, right off the bus. And it’s pretty much always cold inside the bus as the back is not separated from the guests seats. The guests ventilation was also blowing cold air and when I mentionned it to Aslak, he just said that it was the same last night and no one complained. I had a knowing glance with one of the guest, and we let it go.

Aslak is an interesting guy with a few red flags about him. Smooth driving all night, but later in the night, he started off jokingly saying he won't stop again, but he became more serious as time went on, and I feel that if we did have reports of stronger lights on the way back, he genuinely wouldn't have stopped the bus. He was already reluctant to stop before Kilpisjärvi on the way back. He wasn't paying much attention to the door through the night, and guests would knock on the door to be let in and he seemed to ignore it for a second, quite a few occasions I had to go over and press the button, even though he was sat in the drivers seat. On the way back, he was loudly discussing how much he hates Russians for a minute, before I managed to move the subject on. Closer to Tromsø he was discussing a bridge being built, and suddenly came out with a very anti-immigrant sentiment which I did not appreciate.

It’s not fun to work with Eugen. He is making clear in front of guests that he does not like to do this job, he had better life in Bergen. In the middle of my presentation he is interrupting me loudly, asking aggressively if I’m done, because he gets dizzy from the lights inside of the bus. I just overall have the feeling that he doesn’t care about the guests or the tour at all.

Frode was nice, good driver for the most part, made one very questionable overtake maneuver during a bend on the way home. Big, big language barrier, as he spoke no English.
Bit of an issue heating the back of the bus as cold air seemed to be blowing in from vents, and the language barrier made this hard to resolve. The way to fix this seemed to be to crank up the heating in front and let it passively reach the rest of the bus.

It was my first time working with Greger from Boreal, and I didn't feel safe at 2 separate points tonight. First was when we were on the way to Grunnfjord, as I asked him to turn the high beams off so I could see the sky more clearly. He had already done this a few times, but this time he turned off all the lights and we were driving blind for a couple of seconds, resulting in a few audible gasps from the back. The second was worse, during the drive back. His phone rang and he swiped it away, and I thought he was declining, however he then took his hand off the wheel and attention away from the road to grab his headphones, all while we were approaching a curve at speed. He quickly darted back to the wheel and gained control again, but it was a worrying moment, and at this point I was genuinely scared, but I don't think any guests noticed this time. A few times when I came to the bus to check on guests or get equipment he was sleeping, and I had to wake him to get equipment out. He's a very nice guy, but the above points overshadowed that.

Ivar from Boreal was friendly and when he was focusing on driving his driving was good but he was not made for multi-tasking and clearly didn't know the bus at all.
Boreal bus (AS41455) was embarrassing. A very squeaky right suspension that was constantly cracking while driving. There was cracks and holes in the upholstery of the seats and in the rear seats one of the seatbelts didn't retract.

Jon was a nice driver but seemed very uninterested in trying to fix problems, palming any off any (such as the toilet overflowing, he didn't even attempt to fix it and so we just had to lock the toilet for the remainder) with the excuse of him not having driven the bus before.
The bus we had was not ready for the chase at all. (Reg: DR68632) Full of rubbish and evidently toilet tank nearly full.
Drivers 'not having driven this bus' before, and problems arising from this, is a theme recently, and I think we should push with Boreal to make sure that drivers know/are trained in the bus they're driving, at least the basics.

Driver did not help with cleaning even after arriving with such a dirty bus, simply mentioned that there was no time because there was an excursion right before.
Found a lot of rubbish at check-in, obviously not cleaned. Driver mentioned toilet onboard can only be flushed when engine is on, very puzzling.

He came at 7am but was sleeping in the bus at 8am. Driver had a flight to catch and told our guide that tour had to be ended early. He also drove a MB for the first time, hence hitting every bump on the way there. He did not speed but his lack of knowledge of the roads made the trip feel very unsafe. The lights were not working inside of the bus, only when the door was open. That made a wierd atmosphere when I made the presentation. The door was even a bigger problem. It wasn’t closing properly. There was a descent gap between the door and the frame, which gave us a very loud noise for the whole trip and it was absolutely obvious that something is not ok with the vehicle.

Hard bus to work with. No microphone, no lights when the door is closed. The lack of lights makes it uncomfortable for guests to find their stuff as well. The lack of guide seat is also problematic, making our guide job extremely hard as they will be kneeling on the dashboard to see something.

The new Boreal bus is OK. The interior is good, the space in the back is ample, but has no shelves, and so everything is piled on, resulting in it being a bit of a mess when you want one item out of the back. Drivers don’t seemed to be trained in this new bus before. Lack of a guide seat is inconvenient.

Had a great time with the guests but because of Per it’s not a TA night.
Per: The man has a general spirit of being nice but he was tough to work around. He didn’t want to reverse to the parking for packing. His driving though town was very slow and insecure. During my introduction of the guests he quite awkwardly commented that he has lived in Rio. After my presentation I asked him to turn off the blue light and he accidentally opened the door as we drove 80 km/h on E8. He agreed to turning off the car for two shorter periods in the beginning of the night but then he had enough, didn’t want to get cold so he said there will be no more stopping of the engine. I offered a suit for him to stay warm but he didn’t want it. I talked to his boss and we agreed that next night he will have to be better dressed as we should be able to turn off the car for periods of the night. When he heard that 2x Chenghong live at penguin hotel he offered to drop them off there on the way to his garage, that was nice.

During arrival at Sommarøy we were parking next to another BB, and when we were discussing this with Ragnar, he snapped at Meda, saying "I'm the driver and I know best, I will not have this discussion with you" in an angry tone, very much in front of the guests. I think he's a great driver and very safe, but this marred my opinion of him significantly.

Our driver Ragnar in the beginning was tough to work with, Dani had to sit down during his presentation otherwise he was not going to drive. Previously this was not an issue, during the tour the co-operation went smoothly and he was friendly and a good driver.

Some Borealis drivers are a mess. it is a lottery and the way they come in with their demands is both unprofessional and makes the tour harder to run.
Ragnar is generally a nice guy, but he likes to start the tour with "let me explain what is allowed in my bus" attitude. He asked me to sit in the chair and have a seatbelt on all the time. So my presentation was awkward. But then I know, he is right, the law, the law.
Then he also said that we can't use the front row, as he is afraid to get covid. I had to count the seats to figure that the bus had 57 seats. Take away the front row and we would be left with 53, which is exactly how many guests we had. So we had to convince him to let us use the seats, to which he agreed, but still wanted me to sit behind him.
He ran the engine the whole night non stop. The guests came and complained that the bus in the back is a sauna. I had no comments, asked them to take the jackets off.
Later, another Borealis BB pulled in. I spoke with the guide and we got nice separation. As we were about to make a fire, Ragnar came and said that another Borealis BB might come and that we should plan our night and fire so that there is space for them too. But then it might not show up, so he left it to us. I then decided to make a fire closer to our bus.
Then the other driver came over as we were making a fire and called us idiots as we were making it too close to the entrance to the bus. I told him to mind his business, as he was rude. But then he went to our driver and made him concerned about the fire. Then Ragnar came and made an announcement how if the fire alarm goes off in the bus, we would have to kill the fire. Then the two started moving our boxes and people and they were getting ready to move the bus without letting us know. They turned it around and the entrance was exatcly the same distance to the fire. The wind was all over the place, so it did seem pointless. In my opinion the fire was far enough and the guests were blocking the smoke either way. I would have been happy to talk to my driver and come up with a solution, but at that point it was just annoying.
The other driver was staying in our bus for most of the evening chatting with Ragnar. I hope I never meet the guy on one of my tours.

Right before departure, Ragnar told us he wouldn't go anywhere other than Breivikeidet or Skibotn, despite the team's plan to go to the coast. This didn't seem to be based on the actual forecast, which showed N Ringva as less windy than Breivikeidet, and chatting to him later it seems he was basing this off experience in these areas rather than the forecast.

Despite Breivikeidet working well, I still don't like how this went down. The driver should be aware that we wouldn't go anywhere that would risk safety, and the fact that the driver can overrule a decision made by the team and enforce limitations on us, based seemingly on anecdotal experience, doesn't sit right with me. We ran a real risk tonight of being the only team to not see something based on going the opposite direction, and I don't think getting lucky with gaps changed that.
​
I think it was also made 'worse' by Ragnar mentioning at the end that he was chatting to Aslak (Michiel's driver) and Aslak told him they hadn't seen anything, so Ragnar was then going 'you should always listen to me' etc etc, essentially 'I told you so'.

Roar (the driver) was a bit special. When we met him, he was a bit upset he needed to be so early just for packing and then waiting for the guests to arrive. 16 seater is too squeezy, it was difficult to arrange the boxes, causing a lot of sound throughout the trip, making it uncomfortable for back seat passengers

Today Boreal sent Stole to drive for us. Honestly, he was one of the best drivers I've had from Boreal. Stole was helpful, kind, understanding and a good and safe driver. However, the vehicle could have been a bit more tidy. There were lots of stuff in the overhead compartments which we didn't need - thermal suit, bright yellow jacket, a big tripod, bags, etc. It was a bit tricky for the guests to fit their belogings up there.

1 hour and 10 minutes late. First bus that arrived with Viktor was a 44 seater that was in pretty bad condition. Rubbish in the seats and it had viking signs in it, so it looked like it had just come from a Viking cruise tour. Green exterior, no Boreal branding.

Boreal driver Zibi was great, no complaints there. But the MB was problematic. The lights only turn off when the engine is off and the vehicle is locked. So that means that you can't really have the MB standing nearby keeping warm for guests to return to as they please. When we arrived at the parking, our MB really interfered with Alex in BB and Marieke in MB's photos and we couldn't really do anything about it until we were all out of the bus and ready to go to our camp spot. Then Zibi drove 2 minutes away from us down the road when we're stopped so that he could keep the van warm and not create artificial light. When 2 guests wanted to get back on the bus I had to call Zibi to come back and then leave the parking again with the guests, whilst we continued at our camp spot. It didn't make a huge impact this evening and no-one in the group seemed to mind, but it could be problematic on a very cold night, where you need to keep the van warm and nearby.

Zibi from Boreal was a bit quircky, he sat in the guides seat with his feet in the air most of the night watching stuff on his phone on speaker. I don't think it affected the guests much though. He was also quite particular about a place to turn the bus around and drove by really large areas where any other driver would have turned around. He was quite defensive about that when I asked at certain points if we could turn around here so I just let him do his thing. Didn't affect the tour much. Overall he drove well.

Was not driving safely as he had both his hands off the steering wheel at one point of time while taking off his jacket. He was even using his phone while driving. Moreover, when they met a MB on the way, the driver of the MB was also a Boreal driver (Marzena). Marzena asked Zibi if it was ok for his guest to use BB’s toilet and ZIbi agreed without consulting guides.Did not feel right.
