Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum was a developer of Darkwallet which was being developed during the trial of in-famous “The Silk Road”. So, I guess, the associated negative PR received for “The Silk Road” might have influenced him to look into using blockchain technology for a more general purpose functionality related to distributed applications in a trust-less medium.
