Spell out a number when it’s less than 10 or begins a sentence. Otherwise, use the numeral. The same rules apply to ordinals (1st, 2nd, etc).
✅ Five new employees started on Monday, and four start next week.
✅ Videobolt was the first to produce high-quality music visualizers online.
✅ They’re the 12th most popular YouTuber.
Sometimes it feels weird to use the numeral. If it's an expression that typically uses spelled-out numbers, leave them that way.
✅ A personalized video helps you make a great first impression
✅ That is a third-party integration.
✅ Your one-stop shop for stunning videos.
Numbers over 3 digits get commas:
✅ 999
✅ 1,000
✅ 150,000
Write out big numbers in full if they are less than a million. Only abbreviate thousands when space is a constraint, e.g. 150k.
Use a figure and word combination for millions, billions or trillions:
✅ 6 million videos
✅ $3.2 billion market
If used in a headline millions and billions should be abbreviated:
✅ 6M users
✅ $3.2B market
It’s okay to write exact numbers in figures if that’s relevant.
