Dashes and hyphens (— -)

Use an em dash (—) to offset an aside. Use a true em dash, not hyphens (- or --) or an en dash (–).

❗ One exception is when writing titles or header text, then use an em dash with spaces on either side.

Use a hyphen (-) without spaces on either side to link words into a single phrase, or to indicate a span or range.

In order to type an em dash on Windows: press and hold Alt, type “0151” on the numpad, then release Alt.
In order to type an em dash on Mac: press Option + Shift + minus sign (-).
