If an abbreviation or acronym is not immediately recognizable by the reader, spell it out the first time. Use the short version for further references. If the abbreviation isn’t obviously related to the full version, specify it in parentheses.

If an abbreviation or acronym is well known and widely referred to in its shortened form, like API or HTML, use it directly. Spelling out words that are commonly used in their shortened form will only introduce unnecessary confusion.
