The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, established in 2006 by entrepreneurs Jim Hudson and Lonnie McMillian, is a non-profit organization with a 501(c3) status.
The objective of the Institute is to make discoveries in the field of genomics, which can lead to groundbreaking advancements in biotechnology. Additionally, the institute is dedicated to promoting genetic literacy, which can help people understand the importance of genetics in their everyday lives. Economic development

HudsonAlpha’s Economic Development team strives to advance the collaborative spirit of the Institute’s founders and their passion to speed the transition of discoveries made in research labs to the marketplace by supporting entrepreneurs and the biotech industry.
The Economic Development Mission has several objectives, which include growing the biotech presence not only on the HudsonAlpha Biotech campus but also throughout Alabama, promoting an environment that is conducive for entrepreneurs to succeed, commercializing bioscience products, and generating economic impact for local, state, regional, and national stakeholders.

The HudsonAlpha's Economic Development team plays a significant role in helping the Institute achieve these objectives. The team accomplishes this by recruiting and relocating bioscience companies of all sizes and stages, providing support and mentorship to the resident associate biotech companies to enable business growth and expansion, overseeing operations and management of facilities on campus, and building and maintaining relationships with the Institute's governmental and community leaders at the local, state, and national levels.
