ITINERARY

Troop 13 is happy to invite the AOL Scouts and their parents to experience a Troop style backpacking trip! This is a classic trip between Pack 14 and Troop 13 that we’ve done for many years.
We’ll meet at the Greeter Falls parking lot in Altamont, TN () at 9AM on Saturday Nov 4.
Parents will do some car shuttling to the Stone Door trail head a few miles down the road, and then we’ll hit the trail. We will hike 1/2 mile to see beautiful Greeter Falls. From there we will hike approximately 5 miles to the Stone Door Camp Ground. The trail is primarily a rolling terrain with minimal elevation changes (see below for a map and elevation profile). During the hike we will stop for lunch along the trail. You do not need to carry a big heavy backpack for this trip - a small day pack will do just fine.
When we arrive at the Stone Door campground, parents will shuttle the rest of our cars back from the Greeter Falls parking lot, and we’ll get camp setup in the Stone Door campground. This is a primitive campsite that is several hundred yards from the parking lot. In other words, it’s not a long haul backpacking trek, but it’s also not car camping with your car right next to your campsite. You’ll want to pack light, with the goal of being able to carry all of your gear into the site in one trip (but if you need to make more than one trip that’s fine).

Other Details

🍳 Eat breakfast before you arrive on Saturday.
🥪 Bring a sack lunch, one-liter bottle of water & snacks to eat while on the hike.
⛺️ If you have a tent please bring it. If not, we have tents available. We encourage the AOL scouts to tent together however a parent and son are also welcome to share a tent.
🏕️ AOL scouts will set up camp (tents, cooking area, dining fly) with the assistance of Troop Scouts.
🍽️ AOL scouts will assist the Troop Scouts in preparing meals and clean up. Troop 13 will provide Saturday evening’s dinner and a light breakfast on Sunday morning. If anyone has any dietary restrictions, please let us know.
✝️ Sunday morning, we will break camp, have a light breakfast and a Scout Service before heading home. Departure should be by 10am.
🌤️ For area weather information search for (where we start) or (where we spend the night).
🌧️ Rain will not postpone the campout, however heavy downpours or severe weather could. We will send out an email Friday night if we need to reschedule. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Packing List

Wear comfortable trail clothes appropriate for the weather. If possible do not wear cotton clothes - synthetic or wool clothing is preferred especially if the weather is wet (your Pack 14 class-B t-shirts are great). If cotton is all you have be sure to bring a rain jacket and an insulated jacket for warmth.
Shoes - comfortable fit closed toe; tennis shoes are fine for this hike
Additional clothing for evening temps including hat and gloves
Bring some type of rain jacket; rain pants if you have them (Frogg Toggs are a great option)
Sleeping bag, pad, and small pillow. If your sleeping bag is not rated for the anticipated temperatures, you can bring a blanket or two for additional warmth.
Toothbrush & toothpaste (there are no showers facilities at Stone Door)
Small daypack with a one-liter bottle of water, lunch, snacks, and other essentials (a small school type backpack works great)
Camp chair for sitting around the campfire (optional - recommended if you have one)
Mess Kit (plate/bowl, fork, spoon, cup/mug)
Small bottle of hand sanitizer
Headlamp or flashlight with a spare set of batteries
📵 Scouts - please leave electronic devices at home - one of the great benefits of heading out on any of our trips is that we’re able to unplug from our digital world for a few days.
