Song description
The song is a wonderful example of a simple melody written in C major scale as a folk ballad during the civil war music period. Later adapted, rewritten and performed by Elvis Presley.
a ballad is a song where the melody drives the tempo, rhythm and dynamics of the song. often a narrative is set to the music.
Compositional analysis
The song is in the key of C major. The melody line is entirely played in C major whereas certain chords (such as D7) is borrowed from the G major acting as a pivot chord to provide a more dominant flavor to the song, the Em i.e. the 3rd chord in C major is played as E7 to give a touch of the harmonic minor scale, which we will be learning in the further modules.
