a distant relative of Walterboro native Danny Murdaugh, ended this week with the disgraced attorney sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murdering his wife and son. The trial drew global attention and sullied the Murdaugh family name. The influx of locals, tourists and media flocked to the otherwise quiet downtown area to join the gripping trial, resulting in an economic jolt for some businesses. The Walterboro Police Chief reported $35,500 in costs related to the trial. In the culmination of the once-prominent lawyer’s fall from grace, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday. Many residents were ready for the attention to subside and Danny Murdaugh lamented the “circus” brought to Walterboro. The jury was thanked by Judge Clifton Newman and informed they would be ineligible for jury duty through the next year and exempt from service for two more years.
Bryan Kohberger
accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death, have asked the Idaho Supreme Court to keep a gag order in place. The defense team argued that the news organizations should have first asked the magistrate judge who issued the gag order to reverse it. They also claimed that media coverage of the case has been “twisted”. Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree (CONTENT FILTERED) and burglary in connection with the stabbing deaths. A coalition of news organizations, including The Associated Press, has challenged the gag order, claiming it violates the right to free speech. An attorney representing one of the victims' families has also filed an opposition to the gag order. High-publicity cases often present a conundrum for judges, who must balance protecting the defendant’s right to a fair trial with upholding First Amendment rights. News organizations serve a watchdog role, keeping the public informed about how the judicial branch operates.
3 children dead, 2 injured in stabbing at Texas home during CPS visit
On Friday, three children were fatally stabbed and two were injured in an attack at a home in Italy, Texas during a Texas Child Protective Services visit. Shamaiya Deyonshana Hall, 25, was arrested and charged with three counts of capital Murder in connection with the incident.
The victims were all children, including a 6-year-old boy and 5-year-old twins, a boy and girl. A 4-year-old boy and 13-month-old girl were seriously wounded.
The murders occurred during a home visit by Texas Child Protective Services, during which the caseworker decided to remove the children from the home. Shamelia Anderson, a relative of the victims, confirmed that the children attended the elementary school across the street from their home.
The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Texas Rangers. Italy Independent School District Superintendent Rachel Kistner said counseling will be available for students impacted by the tragedy
Know the case worker was the one to call 911, but I just don’t understand how a supervised turns into this. What was she doing?

Walgreens has announced that it will not sell the abortion pill
l in 20 states that had warned of legal consequences if it did so. The abortion pill, mifepristone, is taken in combination with a second drug, misoprostol, and is approved for use up to the 10th week of pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had recently loosened restrictions by allowing pharmacies like Walgreens to start dispensing the drug after they undergo certification. However, more than a dozen states have laws restricting abortion broadly and the pills specifically, and attorneys general from conservative states have argued that shipments of mifepristone run afoul of a 19th century law that prohibited sending items used in abortion through the mail. Walgreens has told the attorneys general that it will not dispense mifepristone in their states and it doesn’t plan to ship the drug to them as well. Other drugstores are monitoring the latest developments and independent pharmacists may become certified to dispense the pills. There are also legal issues surrounding mifepristone's approval and access to the pills.
After a decisive statewide vote in Kansas affirming abortion rights, the Republican-controlled Legislature is proposing multiple anti-abortion measures. The biggest goal this year is to get more financial help for centers that discourage abortions while offering free pregnancy and post-pregnancy services. Three proposals have gained traction in the Legislature, including an income tax credit for donors, medical malpractice insurance, and telemedicine abortions. Abortion-rights supporters argue that even the limited changes being sought defy the will of voters, while abortion opponents contend that the vote did not preclude any new restrictions. Kansas was the first state to weigh in on the abortion issue after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in June. Despite the vote, many state restrictions remain, including a 24-hour waiting period and a ban on most abortions at 22 weeks. Two separate lawsuits are before the Kansas Supreme Court over banning the most common second-trimester abortion procedure and imposing special health and safety rules specifically for abortion providers. One bill approved by the Senate would require the doctor to be physically present to write a prescription for pregnancy-ending pills, while another would prevent abortion providers who can’t get their legally required malpractice insurance in the private market from turning to a state fund providing it. Supporters of the proposed income tax credit say it addresses the financial needs of vulnerable women, girls and families, while opponents argue that it coerces women and provides inaccurate information.
The Rev. Megan Rohrer, the first openly transgender bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination and harassment
Rohrer claims he was misgendered and ridiculed on his first day as bishop, and was later scapegoated and publicly shamed as a racist after firing the pastor of a predominantly Latino, immigrant congregation. He is seeking monetary damages for the discrimination he faced. Rohrer also accuses the denomination of retaliating against him for reporting labor violations. The lawsuit states that Rohrer has received hate mail and death threats as a result of the denomination's conduct, and is now unable to work as a bishop or pastor in the denomination.
Minnesota restores voting rights to felons
under new voting rights law to more than 55,000
"People who are prohibited from voting, they have to pay their taxes, they have to obey all the laws, they have to do everything, but they don't have any choice in who represents them," said Minnesota State Attorney General Keith Ellison. "Now they do."
Maine and Vermont are the only other two states I found with this same law.

A newer drug called Nexletol was approved in 2020 by the FDA to treat high cholesterol, but the new study published in NEJM shows that the drug also reduces the risk of heart disease.
So according to the study at least 93% of Americans over 40 are prescribed statins like Lipitor or Crestor each year to reduce heart disease risk, but a sizeable minority of patients experience significant side effects like muscle aches.
Researchers believe this data supports using Nexletol as a safe and effective alternative for many people who cannot take statins
Dr. Steven E. Nissen, the lead investigator of the study, told ABC News, “"Now we have a therapy we can give patients that is not a statin, does not have statin-related side effects that can lower LDL cholesterol substantially and importantly reduce cardiovascular morbidity."
Dr. Howard Weintraub, of NYU Langone and an expert in preventative cardiology, told ABC News, “"Very notable impact was decrease in heart attack, which was 23%."

On Thursday, SpaceX launched four astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA
including the first person from the Arab world going up for an extended stay. The Falcon rocket illuminated the night sky as it headed up the East Coast, and nearly 80 spectators from the United Arab Emirates watched from the launch site. The crew includes NASA astronaut Warren “Woody” Hoburg and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, both of whom are space rookies. The launch was broadcast live in Dubai and other parts of the UAE. The mission chief noted that they had added a bright new star to the night sky. The crew will replace a U.S.-Russian-Japanese crew that has been up there since October. The first Emirati astronaut, Hazzaa al-Mansoori, rode a Russian rocket to the space station in 2019 for a weeklong visit. Al-Neyadi thanked everyone in Arabic and English once reaching orbit. This spring, two Saudi astronauts will go to the space station on a short private SpaceX flight paid by their government. Despite differences between their countries, the four astronauts have jelled well as a team.

President Joe Biden's administration
is asking Congress to approve more than $1.6 billion to help clean up the fraud against the government coronavirus pandemic relief programs. The White House American Rescue Plan coordinator Gene Sperling believes that this spending will be an investment, as the U.S. Secret Service has already recovered $286 million sent out in fraudulently obtained loans. Biden's plans aim to deal with prosecutions and prevention, including funds to create at least 10 new Justice Department strike forces, increasing the statute of limitations for such crimes to 10 years, and sharing $300 million to hire investigators. He is also planning to issue an executive order directing federal agencies on how to take action on identity fraud, and $1.6 billion from the American Rescue Plan will be made available by June to help states improve their anti-identity theft measures.
Republican senators are accusing the Biden administration of using $39 billion meant to build computer chip factories to further “woke’ ideas.
Republicans say the administration, in implementing the law, is trying to squeeze in priorities that please the Democratic base. Administration has countered that these elements of the funding guidelines announced Tuesday will improve the likelihood of attracting companies.

The administration has countered that these elements of the funding guidelines announced Tuesday will improve the likelihood of attracting companies to build the semiconductor factories and people to work there — a key challenge that could determine the program’s success.
It includes $11 billion for research, in addition to the $39 billion for building advanced computer chip factories.
Graham said Republicans have recourse to make sure the administration knows their objections, possibly taking the squabble well beyond computer chips: “Hold every nominee, make life miserable,” he said

President Joe Biden will travel to Selma, Alabama to commemorate the 58th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" and speak at the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
This bridge is where hundreds of civil rights marchers were attacked by police in 1965, sparking national outrage and leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
Biden will highlight the importance of commemorating this event and the continued fight for voting rights. Last year, Democrats attempted to update the Voting Rights Act with a bill named after John Lewis, but failed to gain enough support. Biden has continued to speak on voting rights, and Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Selma last year for the 57th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday".
Biden also received a warm reception when he addressed the congregation gathered at Brown Chapel AME Church in Selma. Rep. Terri Sewell invited Biden to attend the "Bloody Sunday" anniversary during his State of the Union

Adam Sizemore was an American actor (61)
best known for his roles in the films Heat and Saving Private Ryan. He was also known for his role as Sonny Forelli in the cult 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto Vice City. However, Sizemore's substance abuse issues he claimed to have been addicted to drugs since he was a teenager would eventually halt his promising career. The descent itself began in 2003, when he was convicted of domestic abuse against his then girlfriend, Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss. Sizemore served seven months in prison, and another four months in a drug rehabilitation center after repeatedly failing drug tests while on probation. Sizemore's drug issues with heroin and methamphetamines continued throughout the 2000s, with his attempt to end his addiction the focus of a 2007 docuseries Shooting Sizemore. Three years later, Sizemore would appear on the VH1 reality series Celebrity Rehab and Celebrity Rehab Sober House, the latter reuniting him with Fleiss after her restraining order against him ended.
The actor had suffered a brain aneurysm on Feb. 18 at his home in Los Angeles. He died in his sleep Friday at a hospital in Burbank, California, his manager Charles Lago said. Sizemore became a star with acclaimed appearances in “Natural Born Killers” and the cult-classic crime thriller “Heat”

The Department of Energy also backs this assessment, but other intelligence agencies are split or undecided. The Chinese government has tried to obstruct investigations into the origin of the pandemic. President Joe Biden supports a whole of government effort to reveal the origin of the virus, but no conclusions have been reached yet. China has accused the US of politicizing the origins of COVID-19.

The Lenten fish fry is a popular tradition in many Catholic communities.
The fish fry, a long-established Friday staple during Lent, is roaring back from COVID with an assist from something decidedly newfangled: an interactive map built by local volunteer coders that points the way to scores of churches, fire halls and other places that offer battered and breaded seafood for the taking.
“Allowing people to interact with something traditional through technology, it adds an element to it that appeals to a different group of people,” says Ellie Newman, a member and the former leader of the nonprofit Code for Pittsburgh , which works with Barmer to operate the map.
Then came the steel industry’s foundering in the 1970s and 1980s.
“It makes it a treasure hunt: `Oh — let’s go to that neighborhood,’” Schorr says. “
“As things become more globalized and cities tend to look more and more the same, there’s something appealing about coming to a place like Pittsburgh that still has things like this that have very deep roots in the community,” Newman says. “

Ai or Brain? Dr. Thomas Hartung and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Whiting School of Engineering in Baltimore have developed a plan for a new field called "Organoid Intelligence" (OI).
This plan involves combining stem cell engineering, artificial intelligence, and neuromorphic chips designed to mimic neurons into a type of biological hardware more energy efficient than supercomputers.
This could revolutionize pharmaceutical testing for diseases like Alzheimer's, provide insight into the human brain, and change the future of computing. The team is also developing tools for communication between AI and OI while considering ethical implications such as whether these organoids can develop consciousness or feel pain. With this combination, they hope to create a “brain-on-a-chip” that can learn from its environment and interact with it while being monitored by ethicists for scientific integrity and potential impact on society
While ChatGPT has shown some success in replicating intelligent behavior similar to humans, OI could take decades to reach its full potential but has already shown promising results.
Brain organoids don’t actually resemble tiny versions of the human brain, but the pen dot-size cell cultures contain neurons that are capable of brainlike functions, forming a multitude of connections.
The groundbreaking research allowed scientists like Hartung to develop brain organoids that were used to mimic living brains and test and identify medicines that may pose risks to brain health.
Study coauthor Dr. Brett Kagan, chief scientific officer at Cortical Labs in Melbourne, Australia, and his team recently showed that brain cells can learn to play Pong, the video game.
Courtesy Will Kirk/Johns Hopkins University While ChatGPT can efficiently collect information on the internet, it can’t react to a change in temperature like a cultured cellular system can, he wrote.
This emerging field must take a vigorous approach to addressing the ethical and moral issues that come with this type of scientific advancement and must do so before the technology crashes into the moral abyss.”
Trying to make computers more like human brains isn’t a new phenomenon.
In a recent paper, the team laid out a roadmap of what's needed before we can create biocomputers powered by human brain cells (not taken from human brains, though).
Advertisement In theory, organoid computers would also take up less space.
Then there are also ethical questions about creating and growing brain cells and about whether or not these organoids would be alive—if they could develop a kind of consciousness or experience pain.

CPAC
CPAC stands for Conservative Political Action Conference. It is an annual political conference held in the United States that brings together conservative activists, politicians, and media personalities to discuss conservative policies, strategies, and issues. The conference is organized by the American Conservative Union and features speeches, panels, and workshops on a range of topics related to conservative politics and values.
CPAC has been held since 1974 and has become a significant event on the conservative political calendar. It has featured prominent speakers such as Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Donald Trump, and is seen as a platform for conservative leaders to articulate their visions for the future of the United States. In recent years, the conference has also been a forum for debates within the conservative movement, with disagreements over issues such as immigration, trade, and foreign policy playing out on stage.
Washington CNN — The Conservative Political Action Conference is underway in Maryland.
Among other things, Bannon claimed that, on the night of the election in November 2020, “Fox News illegitimately called it for the opposition and not Donald J. Trump, of which our nation has never recovered.”
Facts First: Norman’s narrative is false.
Rather, media outlets belatedly sent cameras to Mar-a-Lago because Peter Schorsch, publisher of the website Florida Politics, learned of the search from non-FBI sources and tweeted about it either after it was over or as it was just concluding, and because Trump himself made a public statement less than 20 minutes later confirming that a search had occurred.
Rather, he proceeded to laugh about how Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had baselessly blamed the Biden administration for the young men’s deaths even though the tragedy happened in mid-2020, during the Trump administration.
And while Lara Trump didn’t make an explicit claim about unemployment under Biden, it’s not true that things are worse today on this measure; again, the most recent unemployment rate, 3.4% for January 2023, is better than the rate at the time of CPAC’s 2020 conference or at any other time during Donald Trump’s presidency.
CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, is taking place in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, Colorado representative Lauren Boebert, and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley are among the speakers. Donald Trump is the closing speaker and is expected to promise to "Make America Great Again". Despite a thinning crowd this year compared to previous conferences, Trump remains the most popular person in the room. White supremacist and antisemite Nick Fuentes was removed from the conference. Steve Bannon, White House chief strategist turned far right podcaster, has been broadcasting from a stage set up outside the ballroom. Nigel Farage, a British politician, broadcaster and demagogue, has also been attending the conference. Trump is expected to address the crowd at 5:25 pm ET.
