Sustainability

We should have a built-in incentive for creative studios to create public goods to make using the Internet easier, healthier, and more empowering. In the same way that we fund the development of our cities in exchange for civil guarantees, can we fund the Internet to make it a safe, fun, beautiful place for all of us?
playhtml’s ultimate goal is building a public good infrastructure for changing the face of the web. The scope is big enough that practically, it has to be more than just an open-source library made and maintained by a single author. Instead, it feels more like a startup or organization that is stewarding this tool and creates revenue from extras built on top of the tool. We can look to organizations like for inspiration. While they derive most of their income from voluntary contributions, we can take a bit of a more commercial approach with playhtml, doing brand collaborations, selling cosmetic assets, creating a marketplace of interactive online widgets, and a potential subscription service for the online game.
