to reach the highest levels of anything requires playing the metagame
great read. Really interesting meta observation, and I find myself chasing this meta game a lot personally but not understanding that that's what I'm doing. A good reminder to needing to know not only how to play the game but also how the game itself is changing

We know that we should not blame the victim. The "positive" corollary of this insight is that we should not congratulate the victor.

Go make mistakes
I feel like if we all play things too safe, I used to make a ton of mistakes and take a ton of risks knowing that not all of them would work but I started hiding that part of myself out of a fear of failure, excited for the quarantine to end and to start making more mistakes :)

Nick Bostrom's work concerning global coordination
Very relevant with the virus lately. Basically, acknowledging the problem of getting the entire earth to work together on a singular, mutually important issue in a systematic fashion. Many problems fall in the relevant category, including climate change, hindering the development of nuclear weapons, curbing a global pandemic, and the like. Is there some systematic way in which to get us all to work together, when tackling such issues genuinely take unanimous effort? The common theme of all these problems is that, even if one major power in the world doesn't cooperate, it could be nearly equivalent to if no one cooperated. This, paired with the fact that there's no truly systematic manner in which to enforce action if rubber really does hit the road - are we really going to go to war with another major power because they don't swiftly act in anticipation of an environmental crisis? I'd be surprised.
interesting take on cautioning against technological development and outlining the problems of getting everyone to work together on something mutually beneficicial

The best way to live life (at least for me) is to work hard to strive for the growth and betterment of humankind, BUT ALSO to enjoy yourself while doing it. The purpose of growth is to make people happier, to enable them to enjoy their lives in this world more - we've seen that stagnation often ignites civil war in the past, so there is a moral reason to strive for growth. However, since the purpose of growth is to make life happier for more people, it completely defeats the purpose if YOU aren't happy yourself. Invest in your work for the world, but also invest in your happiness and allow yourself to enjoy the fruits of others peoples' life purposes - what they have made.
I've been having trouble balancing my enjoyment and my work. When I'm working, I think about whether I should be having more fun with life - isn't the purpose of life to be happy? To enjoy the short time we are here in the world? But when I'm having fun being a deadbeat, I think about whether I should be doing sometime productive for the world - isn't the purpose of life also to ensure the survival of the human race, to grow, so that others who are currently in need can also enjoy life as well?
Interested in where the take "Stagnation often ignites civil war" comes from. Is it that if you are starved of resources / liberties and in that sense "growth" that a group will take up arms against their brethren? I agree with the sentiment though. Strive to actualize a meaningful purpose but don't work yourself to death doing so.

I've been spending a lot of time doing creative work and creating content. I'm excited to come out of this quarantine a better version of myself.
Content creation has been something on my mind for a long time now, and this situation has given me an opportunity to direct a lot more of my time and energy to it. I enjoy sharing things and I believe that sharing my goals/ambitions is a great way of keeping myself accountable.
I love the increase in creative work and output, although I would say there should be no pressure to become a "better person" or be "productive" during quarantine but all the power to you for doing so.

Books by Haruki Murakami! Very fun reads that really brings out emotions you never could put into words.

added to my list! been exploring more international works lately so this is right up my alley. If you haven't read "A Tale for the Time Being," it seems similar to this and something I enjoyed. Any particular books by Murakami I should look at that are favorites?

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang: gorgeous science fiction writing, and "Story of Your Life" is possibly the best collection of <100 pages I've read. It inspired the movie "Arrival" and is a beautiful story

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
We hear about "The Middle East" all the time in the news, but reading a news report on Syrian missile bombings doesn't portray what it's like to actually live through violence and political turmoil. I love these two books because they put human faces on the events we hear about in the news. Hosseini is also a fantastic writer. His writing is very simplistic - he never goes above a 6th grade reading level - but the emotional impact of his words is incredible. You'll find yourself hooked from the first to last page, with many tears in between. I read these books in high school and they've stuck with me since.
seems like a great historical fiction set in the Middle East which I have not explored at all

I've been trying to go ham on learning chinese, and I think my strategy now is so much more effective than the that of the past because it's a lot more fun and engaging than the past. Before I go to sleep I'm always watching this Taiwanese TV show on Netflix and going through each phrase, copying the characters in my notebook and translating it.
It's on my mind because it's right about the time I'm supposed to start this habit for today and I've been looking forward to it all day.
pressure is on x2. which Taiwanese show? need some shows that are in Chinese to immerse myself LOL

Right on Time - Skrillex
So: I love this song. To a greater degree I love Skrillex, but this song has resurfaced in my recommended and it's been a minute (middle school) since I've heard Bangarang, let alone this song. While it's not his most known work, it's a banger. The escalating time signatures, the perfectly timed clicks and traps, snares and shakers; the dark/light/pure energy that it conveys, the swells of energy and highly-pitched synths that make it impossible to stay still. It's unpredictably predictable and connotes energy, darkness, filth (distorted bass), and light (melodic breaks). Lmao putting the song into words feels like trying to catch lightning in a bottle; luckily for me, Skrillex figured it out and put it into this song. It's a banger. Also I swear I'm sober lol
πŸ™ŒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ƒ ok but i cant really get into this kind of electronic music lmao

BTS and the rise of KPOP in general
I have never previously been a "stan", but recently have fallen down the rabbit hole of YouTube recommendations. I am simply in awe of the talent that many of these groups posses.
