Memberships are an Opportunity Record Type that you can use
When to use: When a gift is donated to join a group or organization and length of membership and membership level need to be recorded.
Example:
Art Museum: Suppose you belong to the local art museum in your town. You buy an annual membership. The membership expires. The museum uses the membership record type to record the sale and then automates an email one month before expiration with a link for you to renew!
Why? Membership expiration dates can be helpful for renewals and levels can be helpful for quickly identifying benefits. NPSP also comes with specialized rollups to automatically update when a membership expires.

If you want to set an expiration grace period on the Membership status field they can set it here.
Example:
If it is 1/1/2021 and my membership expired on 12/31/2021, the membership expiration date field would still be 12/31/2021, but the Membership Status would still be set to Active for 30 days unless changed here:
