Salesforce requires a “Name” field on all records. For consistency sake, NPSP offers automatic naming for Households and Opportunities. This makes data entry easier as well. When creating an Opportunity, users must be trained to put something in the Opportunity Name field because it is required. However, if turned on the Opportunity with automatically rename itself upon Save.
Household Naming
The Account Name field on a Household Record Type can be set by default.
Automatic naming presets to the pattern “Last Name” Household when first using Salesforce.
Example 1: Contact(s) with one last name
Example 2: Contacts with two different last names
Choices for automatic naming include:
Example: Two person household with the “{!{First Name}} {!Last Name} Household” option selected
In this area you can also choose a:
Name Connector - and vs. & that connect pairs
Contact Overrun Count - How many names doe you want to display in the Account Name? If there are three contacts do you want to include all three names?
Name Overrun - What do you want the account name to be if it is more than one name? NPSP defaults to Friends, but many nonprofits change this to “Family”
Household automatic naming also applies to certain fields
Formal Greeting and Informal Greeting are fields on the account object.
The Formal Greeting can include the Salutation Field (Mr., Dr., Mrs., etc.) or it can just include the full name. Informal Greeting can be the first name from the contacts attached to the household (best practice) or something generic like Friend.
