An affiliation record will automatically when the Primary Affiliation is inserted or changed if enabled NPSP Settings. This is enabled by default:
Jack Rogers is affiliated with his employer through an affiliation record. The automation works like this:
Primary Affiliation set:
Affiliation Record Created:
Primary Affiliation changed:
Previous Affiliation becomes former, New Affiliation record created:
Relationship Settings
The first set of relationship fields determine some of the default basic autocreation and reciprocal settings.

Setting John Bond as Ashley James’s Father, automatically creates a new relationship on John’s record where Ashley James is John Bond’s Child.
The automation is determined from the Relationship Reciprocal Settings. The examples below are some that come by default.
Gender Field
When you want relationships to be Gender dependent at least some of the time, the default Gender field will be selected. (Father, Mother, Daughter, Son, etc. you will make this choice.
If you want all relationships to remain neutral then set to None.
