Annual salary benchmarking

Every July we assess the salary bands at each step in the skills ladder and make any changes required.
The benchmarking is designed to ensure that our salaries respond to changing market conditions.
The salaries for FinOps Associates and FinOps Managers are closely correlated with those offered by the Big 4. This is because those firms are currently our most common source of new recruits. They also offer a relatively simple and transparent source of information.
Our business model is very different to the Big 4: we can’t rely on profits from stable FTSE 100 clients, and we need to ensure we have working capital available for growth. Our small size and relative growth create both challenges and opportunities for the team that are very different to a large practice. Our aim is therefore to match salaries offered by large practices, not to become an industry leader.
Further into the FinOps Lead skills ladder it becomes much harder to benchmark. At this stage startup finance roles are a more appropriate source of comparison than practice or consulting roles.
However, startups are also harder to benchmark against: Because they have such small finance teams, they typically don’t provide clear progression pathways, so the salaries are much more varied and less predictable. Their ready availability of VC cash means they can choose to pay people 10% more than their current salary to tempt them in. Finally, remuneration at this level typically also includes share options, which are not directly comparable with our profit share scheme.
At the same time our FinOps Leads also have the greatest ability to influence the performance of Quantico as a business. For that reason, we have chosen to reward progression in the Skills Ladder via increasing variable pay rather than a static salary.
