Buildings fall into various classes, each with distinct fire safety needs (5th Schedule):
Residential: Different types of residential structures have specific regulations. Institutional: Institutional buildings’ safety requirements often relate to occupancy. Shops and Commercial: Retail spaces require tailored fire safety measures. Assembly and Recreation: Theaters, museums, and recreational buildings fall into this category. Industrial Factories: Industrial facilities have unique fire risks and safety demands. Each Purpose Group has its own fire hazards and fire-fighting requirements.
Fire hazards depend on the nature and number of occupants. Example: Purpose Groups I, II & III are residential elements that provide sleeping facilities for occupants. Purpose Group IV (Office), where the occupants are workers familiar with the layout of the building. Purpose Group VII (Assembly Places), where occupants are not permanent or familiar with the building conditions
