Brief 1: Urban Design Vocabulary Exploration

Objective:

The goal of this assignment is to deepen students’ understanding of essential urban design terminology. By working collaboratively in groups, students will research and define key terms related to urban design.

Instructions:

A. Group Formation:

Divide the class into three groups: Group A, Group B, and Group C.

B. Task for Each Group:

Group A: Streetscape and Public Realm

Research and define the following terms related to streetscape and public realm:
Streetscape
Sidewalk
Street furniture
Pedestrian-friendly design
Green infrastructure
Create a visually appealing presentation (slides or infographics) that explains each term. Include relevant images or diagrams.
Present the findings to the class, emphasizing practical examples and the importance of streetscape in urban design.

Group B: Placemaking and Community Engagement

Research and define the following terms related to placemaking and community engagement:
Placemaking
Tactical urbanism
Community participation
Social infrastructure
Cultural district
Create a visually appealing presentation (slides or infographics) that explains each term. Include relevant images or diagrams.
Present the findings to the class, emphasizing practical examples and the importance of placemaking and community engagement in urban design.

Group C: Density and Zoning

Research and define the following terms related to density and zoning:
Density
Mixed-use development
Zoning regulations
Floor area ratio (FAR)
Transit-oriented development (TOD)
Create a visually appealing presentation (slides or infographics) that explains each term. Include relevant images or diagrams.
Present the findings to the class, emphasizing practical examples and the importance of density and zoning in urban design.

Assessment:

Evaluation of each group will be based on the following criteria:
Depth of Understanding: Did students grasp the fundamental concepts and terminology?
Critical Thinking: How well did they analyze the case study and propose solutions during the design charrette?
Reflection: Did students demonstrate thoughtful observation and reflection in their field notes?
Engagement: Participation in the group session and the final presentation.

Submission:

The presentation will be divided into 2 sessions:
Presentation Part 1 (8 July 2024): In this presentation, each group is required to present the terms as describes in the brief above.
Presentation Part 2 (11 July 2024): In this presentation, each group is required to show their observation on the existance, availability and application of each term/concept in an urban area : Pesiaran Perdana, Putrajaya : Perdana Putra (PM Office) - Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC)
