CMS AI Playbook

A playbook is a step-by-step “how to manual” for a complex process. Examples of complex processes include using artificial intelligence, completing a data science project, and integrating human-centered design into a project.

In addition to sharing tactical information about how to accomplish something, a playbook often addresses principles and philosophies that should drive the project.
For example, a playbook on human-centered design will provide step-by-step guidance on how to integrate human-centered design in a project, the tools and resources needed to integrate HCD in a project, and what principles and philosophies drive a human-centered design project.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation does not come easily. This is especially true here at CMS, where we have one of the most robust data portfolios in the federal government. It can often feel overwhelming to look to AI to help automate our manual processes because it’s hard to know where to start. Now, OIT is taking a big step forward in making sure everyone at CMS can have the knowledge they need to get their AI idea off the ground.
Enter the AI Playbook, your comprehensive guide to leveraging AI at CMS. The Playbook outlines in detail key design principles, best practices, step-by-step instructions to design an AI solution, and general guidance on how to apply AI to our mission. The Playbook is especially useful for those with technical talent looking to get in on AI at the ground floor— a full explanation of enterprise-level AI at CMS. Even for AI experts, the Playbook contains helpful principles and action items useful in standing up an AI solution. These resources are reflective of industry standards and are written to inform at a much deeper level than is typical for the government at large.
The Playbook has also been designed first and foremost to be readable, even for those unfamiliar with the more arcane concepts of AI. Leadership and managers alike can benefit significantly from the high-level nature of the principles outlined within and apply it to their technology strategy. Overall, the AI Playbook is an indispensable tool for anyone involved in technology innovation at CMS.
