This dynamic dashboard provides an aggregate perspective on the adoption of digital asset regulation at global and regional level.

For the purpose of the segmentation, country-level approaches to digital asset regulation have been grouped into six models: (1) No regulation in place, (2) Regulation under existing law, (3) Bespoke regulatory framework, (4) Hybrid regulatory framework combining the regulation under existing law with bespoke elements, (5) Restrictions/ban in place, and (6) Other.

Statistics shown are based on the analysis of 117 countries.

Over 60 countries have brought digital assets fully or partially under the regulatory umbrella or are in the process of doing so

There remains significant diversity across regions in terms of the regulatory model adopted and the scope they cover

Bespoke models dominate in the Caribbean while regulation under existing law is most common in advanced economies

Of those countries with regulation in place, close to one third focus nearly exclusively on AML/CFT

Over the past 6 months 25+ countries have engaged in concrete initiatives to advance the regulatory framework for digital assets

Bans/restriction on digital asset activities remain in effect in 16 countries across the countries in scope

This includes an indication of the current status of implementation and the scope of the regime in terms of the breadth of digital asset activities and the nature of regulatory areas covered. It also highlights in which countries an active development is or has recently been underway, such as an active consultation or the issuance of new legislation or other regulatory standards. The individual country fact sheets offer further insights into the nature of these developments and can be conveniently accessed directly from the table.
