Surplus Stores

Affordable, sustainable ways to source office furniture, computers, and equipment from local universities.

University Surplus Stores

University surplus stores are one of the Triangle’s best-kept secrets for startups. When local universities upgrade their offices, labs, or technology, they sell the previous equipment, often gently used and deeply discounted, through public surplus programs. These stores offer everything from office chairs and desks to monitors, computers, whiteboards, and more, at a fraction of retail cost.

NC State Surplus
NC State surplus refers to the surplus property (property no longer needed) from the university, which is sold to the public, other state agencies, and non-profits through retail stores and online auctions.
Public sales are held the Second and Fourth Thursday of each month. Please review the ‘Public Sale Dates’ flyer for dates and times.

UNC Surplus
University Surplus takes any campus item that a department has outgrown or no longer uses and sells the usable merchandise to other campus departments, students, and to the public. Through a partnership with PowerHouse Recycling, Inc., of Salisbury, N.C., University Surplus recycles an average of ten tons of computers and electronic waste per month, as well as 351 tons of scrap metal waste per month.
