Manage Coda With your Voice !

I love managing my life with Coda, but having so much process is absolutely useless if you don’t feed the beast, and forget to add some expense, some sport session or some weight to your tracker
You know how much I love coda. But, althought they’re truly improving the phone application, this is still quite complicated (and, let’s face it, kind of slow) to open this app and interact with it.
Beside this, I wanted to find a way to easily add rows in Coda during my daily life, without my computer : expense, feeding bottle for my new born, quick tasks adding for personnal or professionnal life,...
I wanted to do it with my phone quickly and an easy app, but also while driving or running, with my voice only, finding a way to say to my iphone “Hey Siri, Valentines day with my wife, 100, Restaurant, with label Expense”, and coming back to my computer in my Expense tracker data base, seeing stuff like this !

Then, I worked on a workflow I’d like to share with the community. This is not perfect, this involves different software, but damn, this work so well I couldn’t keep it for me !

The whole process

The logical of the workflow I created for me is possible with the great functions of
to handle webhooks, and transfert informations from a service to another. In my case, I absolutely love how app works in iPhone, this is so fluid and easy. And it also have a very simple system of labels, which will be the key of my workflow to be sure to send information to the good place.
Here is a summarize of the process.

Create shortcut in iPhone (don’t know Android, but i’m sure an equivalent is possible), that would be triggered with Siri, in order to create a task in , with some variables (date, label, project, etc...)

Using Voice & Siri is very optionnal because you can add it directly to todoist, and it works great with quickly feeding the app directly on my Phone. But while running/driving, using voice is so cool !
Once created in todoist, my Make scenario will receive a webhook with the linked informations, and according to the label I defined, route the workflow and send it to create a row in good database.
high-importance
This is the keypoint : you can add row to any data base you want, just define label in todoist to route it the good way. In my case I have the following examples
150 #biberon> will create a row with 150 mL of feeding bottle at now in my Baby tracker database
Valentines day, 100, Restaurant #expense> Creation of a row in my expense tracker database, managed with coda to split it to name, value and category
Task name, due date #transfert> will create a task in my Inbox-to-dispatch job task database, with given due date

Then, I delete the just created task in todoist to keep it clean.

This video explain how it works with computer, but of course it works with mobile app 😎

Your databases, your data format

light
Then, you can imagine absolutely everything. You just need to be accurate defining the entry format of your data in todoist, and how to manage them in coda.
For example, in the expense tracker, I want to define in todoist the following structure
“Name of the expense, value, category”
In Siri, I will say “Name of the expense comma value comma category”, wait for siri to ask me which todoist label I want to apply, and kaboum !
The router in Make will see that the label is Expense, and continues the workflow to the relevant coda database.

Then, I just add a row with current time, and the content to “Data” Column. But I can also add some description from todoist to a canvas column if I want.

Finally, it will create the row in my expense database, and I use very basic function to split the informations in my database from Data to Name, Value, and Category

Active informations & passive informations

This is tutorial is applicable to any active adding wish you may have, with voice or just using todoist app, but with the power of smartphones and Automations in iPhone, you could even add rows to your databases with the same process, with automatic event of your day to day.
If I only take the example in the iPhone, I can create tasks (and then Coda rows) for the following events :
When my alarm is on > track your wakup time
When I arrive/leave a given place > track your location and mobility
When you receive a message in your iphone
When you connect to wifi, bluetooth, etc...
When you battery is low

I Love My Data in Coda, and this process allow me to improve the way I feed my databases easily, on an active way (with voice or with todoist application) or on a passive way (when some event occurs linked to my iphone)

Please let me know if this give your ideas, and feel free to share cool ideas you have how to use this tutorial !
