FinOps: what we do

FinOps is the intersection of finance, operations and technology
Accounting is old and boring, FinOps is the future

The background

Almost all accountants start their careers working in a massive accountancy firms and businesses.
They pay for them to go through a training programme with very old fashioned exams and institutions.
Those exams teach them technical skills, but they don’t give them the skills that they need to run a fast growth finance function.
FinOps is our answer to that problem. Accounting is all about reporting the past. FinOps is about building systems for growth.

Why -Ops?

Traditional accounting focuses on technical compliance and strategic advice. Both of these things are great, but they’re not what founders need to build world changing companies.
Disruptive companies operate in a way that old school legislation doesn’t cover. And they don’t need strategy advice from old men in grey suits.
What they really need is people who can roll up their sleeves and build things. The doers.
For us operations teams in startups are the embodiment of that ethos. Whatever they problem they figure out how to make it happen. They provide the basis for sustainable growth.

My story

Do you want to be a strategic CFO?

when I was coming up in my career there were two routes you could go down
you became either a “technical expert” (a nerdy numbers type) or a “strategic CFO” (an old man in a suit who was too important to roll their sleeves up)
I felt so out of place because neither of these things felt right to me
When I started working with founders I realised it didn’t feel right to them either! I felt like I’d uncovered a scam - everything everyone had told me was wrong
FinOps is about opening up a third option: a ops and technology expert who can build systems for growth

Realising I didn’t know what I was talking about

when I left PwC I thought I knew it all
I joined a prestigious firm, passed 15 exams, got promoted quickly
then I joined a startup as head of finance - on my first day they asked me to automate a process to record international VAT across thousands of transactions on their marketplace
I had a crushing revelation - their is something seriously wrong with a profession where you can go through 15 exams and still have no idea how to help a real business
I realised there was a skill set missing so I set out to try and document it - FinOps

Wait, doesn’t FinOps mean something else?

FinOps is also a framework used by software businesses to manage their cloud computing costs
This isn’t ideal, but it feels a bit late to change our name for it now
